Here is my take on the whole CU thing, for what it's worth:
I played for several months pre-CU, then I left the game for several months because I couldn't devote enough time to it and my friends wanted me to check out some other games.
Then, I just restarted playing post-CU and I noticed the changes that everyone is raving about. Even with some of the issues inherent in the CU (as is true in ANY system in ANY game), the overall quality of the combat is much improved.
I think the reason most people are whining about the CU is that they got used to being uber in an unfair way because of the system, and when they revamped everything with the CU, they took that away from them.
Don't get me wrong. I'm just like everybody else. I hate it when I have invested my time and energy into something and it gets taken away, but that is just the nature of any game when things have to be changed for balance or whatever reason -- some people will be negatively affected. In that instance, I like to just pretend that some in-game cataclysmic event did something to my character and I have to work to overcome the new challenge. It keeps me on my toes and forces me to adapt. If you take that attitude, it really isn't all that bad, although I completely sympathize and totally understand the frustration and irritation.
One of my friends who is playing again has the same feeling those who are adamanatly opposed to the CU have, and I have to encourage him every so often so he can enjoy himself again, and it is working.
Just try this approach and see if it alleviates some of your anti-CU sentiments and lets you enjoy the game more, which is the point of playing after all. It can't hurt to try this change in attitude, and it just might increase your joy of playing.
