Desert of Flames was the first full expansion released for EverQuest II. It is built around an Arabian Nights theme, concerned with the current status and political maneuverings of the descendants of the Dervs of the Desert of Ro.

There are 3 principle factions, or Caliphates, in Maj'Dul, the capitol of the Dervish Nation, each led by their Caliph:

Each Court maintains it's own guard force and fighting in the streets between them is not uncommon. You can ally yourself with any of the courts at any given time, even progressing all the way to Champion of the court, but only one at a time. Almost all methods for raising faction with one court will also decrease your faction the same amount with the other two.

There is a fourth faction, a shadowy court that seeks power for it's own hidden agenda; The Court of Tears. This is the Dervish Assassin's guild.

Quest Series

For all players initially arriving in The Sinking Sands, there are lots of general quests available in the area (See The Sinking Sands Quest Series for more information) but the most important choice is to choose which court you will work for. There are three NPCs at the docks that each will give you quests to build faction with their court. Choose wisely, and stick with quests for only one faction. Trying to work for all three at this point will get you nowhere.

Once you have reached sufficient faction with the NPC you are working for, he or she will direct you to someone in the city to test you further, ultimately granting you access to their Court. The only place in Maj'Dul that will provide you a banker, mender, broker and mailbox access is in the Courts. Also, once inside, you can do more quests including ones that will grant you Citizenship in Maj'Dul, allowing you to buy a house and obtain the Call of Ro ability. All of this is detailed in the Maj'Dul Quest Series.

The Peacock Club

There is a very long series of quests that threads through all the zones in the expansion, called the Peacock Club Quest Series.

Heritage Quests

The Vessel of Fyr'un

Often referred to as Manastone 2.0.

The End Game

There is a supreme title, "Hero of Maj'Dul", that is the result of a final quest series once you have reached "Champion" of all three courts.
