And there's gbaji again telling us how the dems failed to lead the nation thru a pandemic.

If one insists on labeling leaders by political party, it becomes quickly obvious which governors have been most successful containing the virus in their jurisdiction.

And once again, I'll be the one person actually injecting facts into the discussion. Here's the CDC covid tracking page. Now, instead of looking at the color of the states, which is total cases and therefore misleading, go ahead and hover over the states and look at one number: Deaths/100K. This tells us the actual rate of deaths from covid-19 in that state. It avoids statistical issues with testing rate differences in states, and is the best and most objective measure of how well a state has managed the virus.

Let's look at some major states run by GOP governors. Specifically ones which have been criticized in the media lately for their poor handling of things. Texas: 37. Floridia: 47. Georgia: 46. Alabama: 40. Mississippi: 73. Lousiana: 99. Wow. Some of those are pretty bad, right? Especially compared to some other states like say New Mexico, Colorado, and Kansas (hey, that's just 14, so pretty good!).

Um... But let's look at the freaking elephant in the room here. New York state is pretty high too (80). But when you look at NYC itself (there's a special stat just for that city, which should tell you something) we get... Holy Cow! 281. And New Jersey? 179. Massachusetts? 129. Connecticut: 125. The worst states are all run by Democrat Governors.

If we list the top 10 states by deaths per 100k we find that 8 of the ten are run by the Democrats, with only Mississippi and Louisiana run by the GOP. Oh. That's a little unfair though because both NYC and NY state are in that list. So we could just add an 11th and include Arizona, so that gives us 3 GOP controlled states. Or, I suppose we could add another, since DC is in that top ten as well (it's not a state, right?). But that just tosses Illinois into the mix, so yet another Dem controlled state.

Tell me again how the Dems have done this well and the GOP has not? Facts do not support your position.

Would you like to respond with actual data instead of just repeating your assertion over and over?

EDIT: Oh. You can also just click on the "Deaths/100K" tab and get the whole map arranged by that, which is how I generated my top 10 list.

I'd also like to add that Florida, the state that has gotten absolutely massive coverage (mostly negative and critical of the Governors handling of things), is freaking 17th on the list. Why so much coverage then? Because it's run by a GOP governor and is a critical swing state in the election. Don't let the media coverage influence you. Look at the actual facts instead. It's right there.

Because they've been recently spiking and are one of the current primary hotspots for new infections. I mean, that's not really hard to noodle out. But, yeah, "something something GOP crybaby martyrdom everyone's picking on me"

By recently, you mean the last month and a half, and by "spiking", you mean "confirmed cases" and not "death rate", and by hotspot for new infections you mean "we just made this stuff up".

All of the Florida stuff is media driven. The governor made a decision to start opening up early, and he's a Republican, so the entire media establishment simply declared that this would result in massive infections, and demanded more testing. Then when the increased testing occurred, guess what? The number of "confirmed cases" increased. Then when the rational people on the Right mentioned that this was to be expected since you increased the testing ten fold and argued that we should use percent positive of the tests, suddenly testing labs started only reporting positive cases, which skewed those numbers (and was broadly reported, the skewed numbers, not the fact that they were skewed).

If the massive increase in infections that was predicted nearly two months ago when they started opening up and lifting restrictions was true, that should be reflected in the death rate statistics. It's been plenty of time for those increased infections to kill people. Yet we haven't see that happen. Which leads us to conclude that this was all a media fabrication.

No. It's not. it's about speculation leading the actual facts. The Dems have a need to show that the GOP is "wrong on covid" and "ignoring the science", so they assume that's the case, declare it loudly and even do things like block travel from places like Florida to ensure people think that Florida is a hotspot for infections (which apparently worked on you). All despite the fact that none of this is true. The death stats don't lie. If Florida is such a dangerous location due to poor management by it's governor, then why is it's death rate lower than 16 other states? Why is it being singled out?

Not hard to noodle out that it's because it's a battleground state. Period.

Nah. 31,000 new cases (2,700 per 100k) in the last seven days. More than any other state. Sounds like a recent hotspot to me. Have fun blubbering and pouting that they must be testing too much or else we wouldn't have any reported cases.

But nice work playing the sad "But they didn't DIE!!! (yet)" card you've been spoonfed. Hey, what's a little permanent health complications and unknown add-on effects among non-mask wearing friends? Once the Republicans pass that health plan they've been promising since 2008, it'll all be good!

So...you are arguing that measuring the PERCENTAGE rate among the testing is somehow irrelevant?

I'm willing too bet if the percentage rate was incredibly low, you'd count it as a win. So, why decry it?

Except for California and Texas. And how much was the previous 7 days, or the 7 days before that? My point is that the media has been focusing on Florida excessively for the last 6+ weeks regardless of actual cases or rates of infection or percentage of positive tests. It's the tail wagging the dog.

And again, despite nearly two months of declaring Florida to be a death zone, it hasn't actually happened. Which was my point. You have to look at death rates over time. Everything else is subject to statistical manipulation.

It's always baffling to me when people quote a portion of a sentence I wrote and the respond to it as though I meant something completely different than what I actually wrote.

Quote:

No. My point was that when the total number of confirmed cases went up, it was right at the same time that Florida embarked on a massive increase in testing. Which is exactly what you'd expect, but the media reported it was some kind of indication of a massive increase in the spread of covid there. When folks on the Right (that includes me) pointed out that if you do 5x the amount of testing per week this month than you did last month, you should expect to see 5x the number of cases, even if the actual rate of infection remains exactly the same. Of course, that didn't undo the mass of incorrect and alarmist reporting that had already happened.

Folks on the Right demanded that we should be reporting the percentage of positive cases as well as the numbers, so as to allow data to actually determine some degree of actual infection rate. The interesting thing is that those percentages came up really high. Suspiciously high. Of course, the mainstream media just reported the high numbers and congratulated themselves on having correctly blamed Florida and its GOP governor for spreading the virus around. Once again though conservative journalists investigated and found that a number of labs and hospitals were reporting 100% positive test rates, which clearly could not be correct.

Turns out that many of these labs decided that only positive cases mattered, so they only reported those numbers and chucked out the data for everything else. Which is what I was referring to as the skewed statistics. And, once again, while the media jumped on the initial incorrect numbers, they were largely silent when it came to reporting that those numbers were incorrect.

Deliberately inflating some danger in order to scare the heck out of your population in order to get them to hand the government increasing power over where and when they can travel, what types of businesses they can operate, who they can freely associate with, and even what they must do just to walk outside their front doors is kinda fascist. Good catch!

You probably didn't intend it that way though, right?

What's funny is that I made a tongue in cheek comment several months ago about how the government should require that people identify themselves based on various health factors. So if you have covid, are in a high risk health category if you should be infected, if you've recently gotten a negative test, if you've had it and recovered, etc. I joked that they could provide like color coded patches that people must wear pinned or sewn onto their clothes. Cause you know... That would make things easier and safer for us all, right? Right? Lol...

Want to take a wild guess at which of our two major parties might actually think that was a good idea? I'll give you a hint: It's not the GOP.

I AM!!

South Dakota is best Dakota!!

Most of the outbreak hoopla occurred East River (that's east of the Missouri, kids). The huge-ish outbreak in Sioux Falls a couple months ago was all due to one or two peeps infecting everyone else at the meat packing plant. There is no social distancing in a meat packing plant, you see. Moar leik "my face in your armpit all day" distancing. Out west here, the stores/places are lax to stringent on the mask thing. I wear one at work, but it's not required at the local Mini-Mart.
