I had written part of my first post to include a story about a local small business owner who disappeared one night closing up his business. He was dependable man. Everyone thought something bad happened. Cause there had been a couple situations where workers in stores late at night had been attacked. Candle light vigils, etc.

Police find out he hopped on a Greyhound bus with a lot of cash and ran off. Avoiding taxes that had built up over the years. Didn't tell anyone anything. He's still gone to this day. In hiding from the law.

But I deleted it cause I didn't think at the time it was appropriate to liken the two situations.

Edit:
Good news, he's alive (Until you find him).

Bad news... you have to cover that rent.

Erie is actually a pretty nice town. I was only there the one night, but I had fun.

I imagine there are no really reliable statistics on people who deliberately disappear.

I had an acquaintance years ago whose husband went missing. Literally went out to the corner store for milk or some such and never came back. Left his wallet, left his car. His wife was convinced something terrible had happened to him. His family swore they hadn't heard from him, either. No body ever turned up, no signs of foul play or mishap.

As the years passed I came to believe he had, in fact, done a runner. It felt surreal, because they seemed so happy. To think he'd been planning for however long, all the while keeping his wife completely in the dark, just seemed impossibly cruel and calculated.

Nothing solid, but:

DRAMATIC PAUSE!!!

Theory #1 was (co-worker, former cop); Dan had been an enforcer for some east coast interests. It sounds laughable to youse guyz, but if you ever saw Dan you'd be all like "yeah...I can see that", and he was allowed to "come back".

Theory #2 was (me) Dan knew he was dying. He sounded like he was breathing through wet sponges for about 18 months before he left. He had kids (grown of course) in the Erie, PA area and Erie, PA has an sizeable VA hospital. My theory was that Dan wanted to try to reconcile with his kids (very much estranged) and die at the VA hospital. I have no clue if this is true, but a gut feeling says "yes".
