You need to engage the birds immediately or they will lock the encounter on the toad and you won't be able to assist. I had more luck placing the toad on the rock at -275.57, -394.75, -772.17. I also succeeded only when I did not stand on the rock but slightly to the north west side of it. I could then finish the fight. Before I tried that, they would fly off before I could finish them off.
