Having nothing better to do on this obnoxiously hot and humid day, I went to see the new "Star Trek" movie. I put that in quotes because this movie has about as much to do with Star Trek as Gbaji does with short posts. It's actually a fairly entertaining sci fi action movie. Very good special effects, the acting isn't terrible, and action scenes get the job done. Though the way the defeat the enemy is more than a little silly, it looks neat, but is very very silly.

That said, nothing about this movie feels like Star Trek. Sure everyone has the right name, and they use the right technical jargon, but that's were the Star Trek ends. The running gun fights, the silly motorcycle scene, they way the transporter does this weird magical stuff that transporters have never been able to do. Not to mention the space station Yorktown, which admittedly looks amazing on the screen, but doesn't remotely look like anything we've ever been led to believe that anyone from the Federation could ever build.

If you can put aside the fact this is only movie is Star Trek in name only, it's actually a pretty fun movie. I don't regret watching it, I just regret what's been done to the Star Trek name.

Haven't watched it yet. Kind of forgot it came out this weekend, but Saturday was my Great Great Aunt's 90th birthday, so we all had to go do the party thing. She's still healthy, but after all these years her mind has finally started to slip. Up until a couple years ago she was traveling the country.

Liked it better than the last two reboot-era movies. I just wish the special effects weren't so busy, and the camera could focus on something for more than 1.2 seconds.

Edit: Oh, and the bit towards the end with the wonky gravity was pretty neat, but wouldn't that mean that the people on the insides of those buildings would have to stand on the walls?
