I enjoyed totally not smoking anything I wasn't supposed to be smoking anything and watching FLCL. Then I watched it without the smoke and am pretty sure the stuff I had smoked was defective. The soundtrack definitely propelled that show into the stratosphere. Can't wait for FLCL Progressive.

And rumor has it Jamie Foxx has been signed on to play Spawn. Which, sounds like a fake rumor to me. McFarlene has gone on and on about how Spawn was going to be a unseen boogeyman that doesn't speak ... and you don't cast Jamie Foxx for that kind of role.

Supposedly McFarlane wrote the script for Foxx so I'm guessing it's real.
Deadline wrote:
McFarlane adds that Foxx was the actor in his mind when he wrote the script.

“Jamie came to my office five years ago, and he had an idea about Spawn and we talked about it,” McFarlane said. “I never forgot him, and when I was writing this script, you sort of plug people in, and he was my visual guy and I never let go of him. When I got done and my agents and everybody was talking about what actor, I said, I’m going to Jamie first and until he says no I don’t want to think about anyone else because I’ve never had anyone else in my head. Luckily, he hadn’t forgotten either. I said, ‘Hey, I’m back to talk about Spawn again, and he was like, let’s do it.'”

In other news, we might get an adaptation of The Jungle Book that's fairly badass and doesn't have any singing bears.

Saw the Mowgli trailer when I went to watch Solo. Seemed kind of weird to me since we just had a jungle book movie. Also I enjoyed Walken singing as King Louie.

Legion: Biggest takeaway Lenny and new-Janine getting it on. And apparently new-Janine becoming pregnant thru the magic of Lesbian Sex. I guess it wasn't a strapon that was being used during the montage. Edit (spoiler continuation). I guess I did forget that Lenny was originally a guy. They hadn't explored that aspect very much this season.

I'm looking forward to an adaptation with no singing animals. And no silly King Louie (Louis?) character, who was invented by Disney anyway.

I'm confident that the audience for a (more or less) faithful retelling of Kipling's work is me and maybe twenty other people. Even this one seems to play looser with Kaa. In the book, Kaa is a massive creature, respectfully treated by Bagheera and Baloo and Kaa does most of the work in rescuing Mowgli from the monkeys before becoming friends with Mowgli in later stories. The films all treat Kaa as an antagonist trying to eat Mowgli for whatever reason (Mowgli is also, IIRC, immune to Kaa's gaze in the stories just as he can stare down any animal of the jungle). This one, at least from the brief trailer, seems to be doing the same bit with Kaa as the antagonist.

Quick behind-the-scenes and teaser clip for upcoming Preacher season. Looks more of the same to me. Looking forward to more Herr Starr shenanigans.

Do the Supergirl writers want us to hate them? Bumpstocks! Guns! Evil!

The gun company CEO and his "oh, that must be one of our non-automatic guns that someone modified with a bumpstock"...

The civilian vigilante that rivals a small army and has armor that can withstand tank shots... is upset that people might want a gun for self defense. It was worse than his "they only pointed a gun at me because I was Black" moment last time...

DEO phasing out guns... Smiley: rolleyes

FLCL Progressive. Was a bit disappointed that They reused Little Busters. I mean, I like the song, I wanted something not used from FLCL so much.

The opening dream sequence was well done. The "Thank You Mr Twilight" song blending into her alarm clock. Her apparently stumbling upon the corpse of Atomsk. I assume that was Atomsk's corpse that awakens Conte 3.0 inside of her.

The teacher's second rant leading to her gradually changing her voice to reveal Haruko was fun. Though I was disappointed by the poorly done subtitles on Hidomi's phone during both the first rant (no translations at all) and the second rant (translations done, but poorly edited with a bad location and color). The teacher showing "Naughty" videos to the students. And Ide and his friend with the "unisex skirt and panties"...

Ending song and the imagery shown there seem to suggest that Haruko absorbs Atomsk's power, but Jinyu splits out of her shortly there after.

Hidomi's mother seems to be just as bad at being a mother as Naota's father was at being a father.

Supergirl tends to be preachy but last night's episode was outright embarrassingly so. I wish they'd just leave it to Black Lightning. That show knows how to at least speak about social issues that doesn't make you throw up a little.

I got exactly what I was expecting out of the new FLCL. It started off "normal" and started getting weird as it neared the end of the first episode. I kind of thought that the episode they showed on April 1st was this season's first episode, but it turns out it's actually the first episode of the third season. Like a long music video.

Legion nearing it's season finale. I am totally expecting, and will be disappointed if not, this confrontation between Farouk and David they left the episode to be just as out there as the bollywood dance and the Lenny/Oliver/David dance-fight.

They gave David the classic Kid n' Play up-do from the comics at the start of the episode, so that was neat. I'm kind of expecting absolutely nothing because this show likes to mess with you and expectations are all over the place.

According to Jay Chanrasekhar, he and his production company (Broken Lizard, for the one person that doesn't know) were dropped a Marvel Encyclopedia and told to go basically wild. There's plenty of off-the-cuff characters and teams I think they could give the Club Dread, Beerfest or Super Troopers treatment to. Off the top of my head I'd say Great Lakes Avengers or Nextwave.

Oh, and according to Variety, Warner Bros. in their infinite wisdom are looking to bring Jared Leto back for a solo Joker movie. Not to be confused with the Elseworld Martin Scorsese Joker solo movie, which still hasn't been officially disavowed.

First official trailer for Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse: Not too bad, definitely enjoy the stylized animation. Not wild about the music, but it's not bad, just not my thing. Also not a fan of their throwing in Spider-Gwen, but I guess you can't do multiversial characters without throwing her in there. Kind of hoping they'll throw in the Spider-Man from India, Spider-Manga, and Spider-Ham as well. Might actually have to check it out.

... Lego Movie 2: I got nothing. Looks like it'll be about the same as the first movie, plus the little sister.

And Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2: I like that they did a whole skit about how "Ralph Wrecks The Internet" would be a better title, which I'm guessing as with the current trend it was a scene that was created just for the trailer and won't actually be in the movie. Also the Princess scene is a lot better than I thought it would be. If only because of Cinderella.

Since this has long become discussion of "all things TV and film", I have an question. Did anyone else actually follow The Americans to its conclusion? If so, what did you think of the finale?

To me, it was more out with a whimper, rather than a bang, and more than a bit disappointing.

I think what bothered me the most was that they created this huge buildup. A plot against Gorbachev threatening the START treaty (and historically, the end of the cold war) was brewing. They were in the middle of it, made a critical decision and then... nothing. I mean, we can assume that when they arrived back in Russia, they provided the critical info against the plot to the right people and prevented it, but would it have killed them to include even a single line of dialog maybe mentioning that that's what they were doing (or even intending to do)?

The series, even when it was a bit weak, at least always had "bang" resolutions. This was... not. I fully expected the reveal to Stan, and the aftermath of that, but it was horribly handled IMO. They went right to the edge of "if you arrest us, the plot will succeed, and bad things will happen", and then apparently abandoned it, and just went with "let's be weepy and ... <something something> and he'll let us go".

As the plot was unfolding, I fully expected them to go in the direction of Stan figuring it out, them telling him what was going on, and then him deciding to let them resolve it at least, if not doing something to help them. Perhaps with some thrilling espionage as he has to prevent his own folks from figuring out what's going on long enough to ensure that the plot fails, and along the way, this allows the Jenning's to escape, all while not getting himself caught or something. While that might have been unreasonable for a straight arrow guy like Stan, it's not like it's completely out from left field, given his past interactions with Burov, and it certainly would have made for a much better story.

You know, make it clear that the main character's actions actually had some meaning and effect. Instead, it just kinda... ended. It clearly felt like the writers just decided to go with this melancholy "now our lives are upended and it's all over" kind of ending. But man. Just not fun to watch at all. Not what I was expecting.

Which was too bad, because the series had some really good stuff in it along the way. Way to end on a really low note.

I only watched the first 2 or 3 episodes of this season of Americans, haven't finished it. All the finales after the first season finale had been gradually less impressive. Music selection and what not for that first one was just unexpected and worked well.

In other TV show related discussions. Archer on FX. I really don't like these last two seasons too much with Dreamland and Danger Island. I'd prefer them back in their real universe not in what I'm assuming is Archer's mind still (I didn't pay too much attention to last season). But Pam has gone from a disgusting, annoying woman to some sort of "Death by Snu Snu" Giantess Femdom Fetish Figure...

Didn't watch the Americans' passed the first couple of episodes. It just didn't keep my interest. As to Archer, I rather liked Dreamland, it was a bit dark, a bit funny, and had some amusing alternate versions of the characters. Danger Island hasn't been that great, but even a so so episode of Archer is still worth watching.

Cloak & Dagger was a lot less tween than I thought it would be. Somewhere at the upper edges of PG-13, for certain. Plenty of sex, drugs, and choir. Not bad, but directionless which really doesn't mean much since it's just the first two episodes. The music was pretty horrible, though. I really wish it were like a video game where you can turn off the voices or the music and leave the other. Overall interesting enough to stick with a couple more weeks.

Caught Cloak & Dagger on Demand over the weekend. Not much to go with so far, but I agree the music wasn't very good.

Fear TWD: Seems we are just waiting for this series to end now... kill off all the main characters and get a whole new cast. Or just end it. Seems like by the end of this season nothing will be left.

I saw article headlines over the weekend about Rick's actor getting out of TWD. But I didn't bother clicking or reading anything on it.

Legion Season Finale: Only disappointing part was that Farouk v David was only 4 minutes long. But the song choice, animation, etc. were all well done.

Then Oliver and Melony in the ice cube, and both of them just using the wrong words. Glasses McLabcoat and the Girl who Kicks.

I think the fight was the peak of the episode though. The rest leading up to the actual finale was OK but didn't really have as much of an impression as the fight.

This season of Legion was very musical, and for the most part pretty well put together. I'm still waiting for the shoes to drop and it's revealed this is all in his head. Nothing that's happened has really changed my opinion of that. In fact, their adding more characters just means his mind is splintering even more.

Yeah. I'm definitely leaning in that direction too. Several points:

1. The environment is whacky. Just way too much weird stuff to explain away. A big drain hole in the desert? A Minotaur? I could maybe buy the giant tuning fork, I suppose. But floating hands around the buildings? Upside down rooms? Maybe the folks at Directive 3 just really love weird environments and ridiculous color/design schemes or something, but yeah, it looks a lot more like serious crazy going on.

2. While you could theoretically explain away the various actions and events as "strange powers in the real world", a lot of stuff still doesn't work. There's also the problem that there doesn't actually appear to be anyone else living in this world except David and the various characters he interacts with. Well, except for the one time Lenny goes to hang out with her old friends, I suppose. Everything we see happen seems to revolve around David. Also, the whole "future Syd" thing seemed a bit off to me. If this is just in his mind, this could be explained as his own perception of that future (or replaying events over and over in his mind, trying different outcomes, which might be perceived in his fractured self as "messages from the future"). Dunno. It makes more sense if it's just another voice in his head rather than someone actually sending messages from the future.

3. The whole end scene bit with the trial. If we thought for a moment that this was in a real world, and they were actually just flipping things around to capture David, they'd still never in a million years just let Farouk go free like that. He's been the villain of this season (if we assume a real world scenario). If it's an internal struggle within his mind though, it makes complete sense.

4. This entire season could be defined as a voyage of self discovery. He's struggling with his own self identity. Am I a good guy, or a villain. The entire conflict with Farouk can be viewed as a manifestation of this struggle. Farouk being freed isn't about the tables being turned, but his own inner villain taking control. After all, if this is all in his head, then this is all about parts of himself fighting each other for control/dominance/whatever. It's not "real", but imagery representing what he needs to see/feel in order to take that next step on the journey.

Heck. I'm not sure if this makes Farouk "good", but more that he (or the version of him that's in David's mind) is an opposing force to David. He turns those whom David needs to view him as "good" against him, which turns David "evil". I guess. Again though, that entire scene only makes sense if this is really all just happening inside his head.

This all gets more interesting if we assume that the original source is still valid, and all (or at least some) of these characters are "real people" who David has absorbed in some way. Now whether he's actually pulled them into his mind, or has just made himself an alternate personality that mimics them is unknown (and may never be clarified anyway). I'm still on the fence in terms of whether at some point the story needs to actually move into the "real world", or if it's just as satisfying if it's all just a struggle inside his own mind. Either works, as long as they make a clear decision and go in that direction. If they choose the latter, then it really doesn't matter if these characters are "real people" at all (we'll never know or care since we'll never see the real world anyway). But if they do decide to take us outside his mind, it'll be interesting to see how they do that.

I could totally see them just playing the story along with a series of conflicts inside his own mind, taking him down one path or another as he attempts to decide who and what he is, with great struggles along the way, leading to a finale where we pan out to see him lying in a hospital bed, and there's Charles Xavier with his hands on David's head working to "heal him" or something. Maybe it'll work, maybe it wont. Perhaps he'll need to be left in the prison of his own mind for the safety of the actual "real world" (which is more or less what happened in most of the comics involving him). That would actually probably work from a story arc point of view.

It snuck up on me, but Luke Cage season 2 apparently airs this Friday, and the soundtrack will be simultaneously released. The first season was pretty decent, up until the back end where it crashed and burned, but even saying that the soundtrack was definitely great so that's what I'm looking forward to.

Westworld is over for another season, and this season was just as mindscrewy as the last. Just trying to keep the timeline straight was a task in and of itself. Luke Cage is kind of slow, which isn't bad but I think that's the major complaint people have with the Netflix shows in general. The Danny and Luke stuff is definitely some of the highlights for me, but that's because I've been waiting on Heroes for Hire interactions since Daredevil season 1 was announced.

Spider-Man's next sequel is, at least for now, titled Spider-Man: Away From Home which I think is pretty lame.

Predator trailer. Apparently it's based on that episode from Family Guy, where Brian has a script butchered into a sitcom. Presenting ... BIGGER PREDATOR.

I liked the first two thirds of the the second season of Westworld. Right around the samurai episode it started going down hill. Then we got to the season finale and it really didn't do much for me. It all devolved into a mess of killing, body snatching, and some pretty well trodden and not particularly well written science fiction babble about the nature of humanity.

If there is a third season, I might end up skipping it.

I think they went a bit too far with the whole "out of sequence" thing. I get why though, it's what made the first season work. But in that case, they were following 3 more or less clear time sequences. But each one was done "in order" at least from their own reference point. In this season, they had events occurring to the same people out of order. Yeah, they were each kinda "a storyline" (and to be fair, the same people were involved in multiple time sequences in the first season too), but given the relatively short time period involved with all of the events going on (I got the impression the whole thing occurred over a period of maybe a week or so), it made things very confusing.

It worked on some level, because there were a few "a ha!" moments in the season where you realize that something you thought was in one place sequence-wise was actually somewhere else. But there's so many of them, that I'll likely have to re-watch the whole thing again just to see if I can follow what was going on and in what actual order. I did get the sense that the story was complete and made sense, it was just so jumbled in how it was presented that it was really really hard to follow. There's still a couple points where I'm still kinda scratching my head asking "ok, so when did this happen?".

Quote:

I'll probably watch, just for the curiosity factor. I'm honestly not sure how they could do a third season now. There's not really any "Westworld" left. They killed off pretty much everyone (in the park at least). Everyone either escaped to the virtual world that Ford built (but basically no one we were following anyway, so more of a "here's where all the rest of the hosts will live happily ever after" kind of thing), or escaped into the "real world" (Dolores, Bernard, copy of Dolores in whatshernames body, and what looked like 3-4 others). Maeve and her group all "died" in the battle in front of the gate thingie. We could speculate that they might be recovered/rebuilt (and perhaps given some freedom/plot/whatever since the two tech guys did survive).

The only really interesting bit was the end scene where we're left still speculating as to the nature of the Man in Black. Given the focus earlier on Dolores testing host-Arnold (and then deciding to bail on that and just make him a "different" person named Bernard instead), and the similarity of the language actions taken by his daughter (I think that's who it was?), leads to questions as to exactly what's going on with him, and which if any of the members of his family are "real people" at all. Tie that in to the earlier assumed impossibility of making a human copy actually work as a host (Bernard was created via Dolores' memory of him, not a copy of his own mind), said assumption then repeated by Ford when he was in the cradle, it makes one wonder. Was he also a copy the whole time? We don't actually know how long he spent in the park each time. Maybe it was a short enough period for each copy to function before going nutso (which he kinda did), and failing. Or maybe they/he secretly did perfect the tech after all?

Again though, I'd assume they'd have to focus on hosts in the "real world" and their struggle to do whatever, but that now becomes a completely different sci-fi story than Westworld. It kinda morphs into Blade Runner at that point, I guess. As a two season only series though, it works. It tells a basically complete story, and they could just stop it right there. Who knows?
