Actually, my issue was less Barry not catching it so much as it only sticking like two inches into Iris' shoulder. I mean a 9mm can go clear through a body at half the velocity and twice the distance, and a .50cal travels about that shard of glass' rate and can remove a limb before the nerve endings even have time to register so I figure it should have done more. I'm more whining about the Weenie Force Field surrounding Iris. Not quite as powerful as Felicity's when she fended off trained assassin ninjas with an iPad, but still.

Arrow: Speaking of inexplicable, not even three minutes in and I'm asking myself why they didn't just point bola-arrows or some other restraining gimmick at both doors? Sure, they needed an excuse to have her stand near a ledge to fall off. Also for a show about an archer, there is surprisingly little archering.

dropping the spoiler tags cause it's old news now.

I think you still missed my point. The 9mm is not moving at half the velocity of the glass, it moves at half the velocity of Barry. The 9mm is moving at 16 times the velocity glass.

Distance and time are the important parts here. The glass is not moving faster than Barry, the glass is moving much slower than Barry, only 50mph in the example (chosen because I felt that would be a good guess at a glass shard from a crashing street drag racer).

My example was meant to show not that Barry could miss it, but that Barry could miss it even if the glass was not only slower than Barry, but so slow that it would be a reasonable speed for a piece of debris from a wreck.

A piece of oddly shaped glass traveling at 50mph would reasonably stop in a wound without going through when compared to a 9mm bullet traveling fired speed.

It's possible, math isn't my strongest suit. I honestly believe you that it's possible, but I don't think I can wrap my head around it. "Guy who can run fast enough to travel through time and solid walls can't catch an object going half the speed of a fastball" just doesn't want to compute. Like all those old Superman shows, where he's being shot and just standing there and then ducks when someone throws the pistol at him.

On the topic of the Flash/Supergirl crossover, the episode title is going to be "Worlds Finest," a play on the DC "World's Finest," but dropping the apostrophe, which implies multiple worlds. A topic that Flash is currently exploring, so that means the two characters aren't from the same dimensions, limiting the number of crossovers I'm sure but a nifty gimmick to have in your back pocket should you want to bring characters from one network to another. Speculation and whatnot. The episode is scheduled for March 28, on CBS.

Weird Al to voice the title character of a new cartoon on Disney XD by the guys who did Phineas and Ferb called "Milo's Law." The show is described as "the great-great-great-and some more greats grandson of the guy who came up with Murphy's law, Milo, who is the personification of everything can going wrong does. And he remains optimistic through it all." Al will also do the theme song and the songs that are in the show and such. So that should be neat if you're a Weird Al fan like me. At least for a season.

FX's X-Men based "Legion" to star Rachel Keller, Aubrey Plaza, Dan Stevens and Jean Smart. April Ludgate will play the main character's best friend Lenny, who has lived a life of substance abuse but believes her life will change for the better at any moment.

Not having seen the show in question, the more important point from a physics point of view is that shards of glass from a car wreck cant be propelled at a speed faster than the car that wrecked was traveling (relative to the person being struck by the glass of course), and will in fact be going some ratio slower due to energy loss from the impact, angle of deflection, etc, etc, etc. If Barry was unable to get there in time to stop the glass from hitting her, it wasn't because he was too slow relative to the speed of the glass, but because he was too far away to make up the distance in the time it took the glass to travel to her.

Um... But at the end of the day, you're talking about a show with a guy with super speed. My suspicion is that he travels at whatever speed he needs to based on the plot requirements. Shows like this are chock full of inconsistencies for this very reason. Fans ask the question "why didn't they just use <something they used previously that would easily have resolved the situation at hand>" all the time. And yes, the answer "because the writers wanted X to happen" is never very satisfying. It's a pet peeve of mine with sci-fi/fantasy shows, and sadly, it's a rare thing when a show's writers actually bother to get it right even a small percentage of the time.

Drag racing car is wrecked
The Flash runs to save the person in the car and put them in a safe location.
Wrecked car flings shards of glass and other debris toward bystanders.
One bystander is the Flash's not so secret love interest.
He notices, and runs from where ever he is standing (some distance away) to try to stop the glass.
He fails.

Previously in the episode, a device was attached to the Flash's suit that was siphoning energy from him. Which translated to a 2% reduction in his average speed. Since he just barely failed (his hand was almost touching the glass) it was the 2% reduction that caused him to miss his goal.

Had his speed been faster, or the distance been shorter, he would have made it. Given the situation at that moment, the speed and distance of the glass were fixed variables. And his distance was a fixed variable. The only thing he could change to help the situation was his speed.

(DistanceFlash) / (SpeedFlash) < (Distanceglass) / (Speedglass)

To put it in a context that doesn't involve math:

The tortoise and the hare. Even though the hare was faster than the tortoise, by the time the hare realized his mistake, he couldn't travel fast enough to cover the distance between him and the goal before the tortoise could cover his distance. By no means is the tortoise traveling faster than the hare, or even at all close to the speed of the hare. In this case, the glass is the tortoise and the Flash is the hare. It doesn't really matter what the speeds involved are, given two finite numbers, there is always a distance after which the slower one will always win.

Here's the clip. After he almost touches the glass either Barry stops chasing it the last two feet, and I absolutely refuse that he did so to avoid running into Iris because he's completely unaffected by momentum when he can start, stop, and sharply turn instantly, or it had some kind of thrusters and basically doubles in speed.

That's just a failure in the dramatic camera work and time freeze filming. The glass shouldn't have been spinning end over end as quickly or nearly at all at those slowed frame rates and Barry's hand should have remained in the shot the whole time. Just inches away. Poor film editing and scene layout choices.

The scenario could still happen, without the glass traveling faster than Barry.

I can live with that. Just a badly filmed scene all together.

In Deadpool news, next Monday five Viacom networks (MTV, VH1, Comedy Central and Spike. Not sure what the fifth channel is.) will run custom TV spots for the upcoming "Deadpool" film in place of all other commercials during three hours of programming.

Programs such as "Tosh.0," "Workaholics" and "Golden Girls" will run only these "Deadpool" spots, which were customized to fit the target demographic of each show. For instance, the "Golden Girls" spots will feature Deadpool with a rose and other Valentine's Day trappings. "Teen Mom," "Ridiculousness," "@midnight," "Love & Hip Hop" and "Cops" will also be part of the targeted programming. They're really going all out, which is good for them considering having a higher than average R rating is going to (theoretically) limit ticket sales this is a good way to draw as much attention, and that weekend is a busy time for movies, what with Pride & Prejudice & Zombies, and Zoolander 2 premiering the same time. I hope someone on Youtube makes a compilation of all the spots. I'm kind of curious about the Golden Girls one, and the no doubt lewd comments about Bea Arthur.

DCLoT: Seems to be some issues between Arrow and DC Thea, or maybe it was Captain Jack, says that they cured Sarah of her bloodlust when Constantine brought her soul back. But Sarah still has it in DCLoT. Maybe they are just mistaken in Arrow, since they aren't actually the person in question.

I'm debating whether I should see PPZ tomorrow or not. Have yet to decide.

Yeah. Bad visual effects work. Honestly though, what they're trying to portray is nearly impossible to actually fit on a single screen image. Well, not and make it look at all dramatic. Assuming the glass is traveling at say 50 mph, and he's traveling at 1400 mph (I think those are the numbers tossed out earlier, and if not, they're good enough for a simple example), then he's actually going 28 times faster than the glass. Even doing the typical super slo-mo type shot (and yes, the glass should not be spinning at all if you've slowed it down that much), the time it takes for him to fail to grab the glass (versus succeed with miliseconds to spare) is so small relative to the distance you could fit in the shot that it just doesn't work visually. He's catching up to the glass so fast that if you had any time to show his hand in the shot, he should have been able to grab the glass. If you have any distance between the glass and the victim in front of the glass, he should have had time to grab the glass.

Using those numbers as samples, if we put him 5 feet from the target at the beginning of the shot, and he's traveling 28 times faster than the glass, the glass needs to be 2.14 inches from the target for it to reach the target in the same amount of time he can. Which doesn't make for a very exciting shot, no matter how much you slow time. If he's ever seen close to the glass (like his hand within a foot for example), the glass should be so close to the target that it's impossible for the audience to tell it hasn't hit her yet, for him to still fail to catch it in time. Again, that makes for a terrible shot. Oh. And technically, he'd still reach the glass first since that's the equivalent distance the glass would travel while he traveled 5 feet. But he's 2.14 inches closer to the glass, right? Anything with him farther or the glass closer doesn't give us a shot at all, much less any possibility of showing his hand being "close" to the glass while still failing to catch it prior to impact.

So they go for drama rather than accuracy. Annoying, but I can see why they'd do it that way. Drama says we need to show the dangerous object moving towards the helpless victim. But the physics of the situation are such that any movement we could readily and clearly show would be too much for the hero to have failed to save said victim. Same reason why the glass is spinning in the shot. You need that to show the mostly physics ignorant audience that these are shards of glass, and they are moving, and we know this because they are spinning, and there's blurred background, and all the other stock visual tricks that film folks use to show us these things. Ultimately, I chalk this up to the same sort of thing as why you can hear the Enterprise's engines as it flies by in space. It's about creating a more satisfying image for the audience, not about portraying things 100% accurately.

If you put any stock in Rotten Tomatoes' ratings, you may want to decide against it.

It's the pinky that gets me.

There were also spots of Independence Day 2 without the Fresh Prince of Air Force, The Jungle Book with Bill Murray as Baloo, and another Jason Bourne movie.

Turkish Airlines also got in on the craze, which is a ... weird product to be advertising Batman v Superman, but there you have it. One for Metropolis and one for Gotham.

Some last minute Deadpool news. Apparently there are going to be two after credit scenes, so if it wasn't obvious at this point to stick around it is now.

Supergirl: Dude ... it might be sophisticated but it's still a computer. Giving it a sob story isn't going to give you your answer. Just take a damn picture of the NotStarro and show Compumom.

In Preacher news, Jackie Earle Haley has been brought in to play the ridiculously hilarious villain Odin Quincannon from near the end of the book. Which, if true to comics, will be hilarious.

She's a woman, emotion is the only weapon they know how to use. Except of course giant Kryptonite edged blades to pierce the heart of your step-Aunt.

Last night's X-Files really got back to the good-creepy stories of the past. The previous week's episode had been odd and funny. I noticed that they didn't show the one murdered woman being ripped part like they did all the men. I wonder if that was a conscious decision. Two men get arms and heads ripped off, while in silhouette, but still pretty visible. The one woman, they cut away and then just show a small bad of red goop being placed in a trash compactor. I don't like whiny Scully though. And Scully's blouse was unbuttoned quite low while she was sitting at her mother's deathbed. I still find her attractive, but thought that a normal person would have had one or two more buttons up on their shirt while sitting in a public hospital room.

Yeah. That bugged the heck out of me. It either knows, or it does not. Going all weepy on it isn't going to work.

On the flip side, I was equally annoyed that Compumom *didn't* know what it was, given that Astra figures it out instantly from a pretty vague statement, and knows exactly how to deal with it. How is it that a random Kryptonian just knows this automatically, but a computer designed to help guide and instruct Kara fails to have such information? I get that it's a plot thing requiring that Astra show her humanity (or whatever the Kryptonian equivalent would be), so that her death has more dramatic meaning and what not, but it was pretty ham fisted.

ABC decided that 5 minutes of the Muppet Show was more important than Agent Carter.

So I missed 5 minutes of the end of the episode. Now I have to find it somewhere else to finish off the last bit.

Well, Astra wasn't just a random Kryptonian for one, and previous episodes established she was basically Kara's teacher when it came to space species and such, so that and Evil Husbandâ„¢'s heavy handed hinting it could explain that. Why Compumom didn't get it I just kind of chalk it up to Earth Sister not being good at describing it and opting to try to plead to the computer's emotional side for an answer.

Somehow the rebar missed her kidneys and no tetanus or anything and she only needed was a bandaid. Apparently concern for a coworker was enough to put Chief and Nurse's marriage in jeopardy. Then Madame Masqueless threatened her husband, and Ghost Science Dad vanished again. I think that was the last five minutes. I usually change the channel before the previews for next week's episodes start up.

Flash: Earth-2 aesthetics are nifty. Kind of place I'd like to live. Joe is ... er, was Frank Sinatra. The dimension hopping montage was interesting. I spotted Jonah Hex, a Lantern Ring, Original 90s Live Action Flash, and Melissa Supergirl. Barry seemed to have gone full ******, which is par for the course when it comes to time / dimension travel, to assume that just because you have a doppleganger that you can act exactly like them.
Carter: Nice to see background characters get some love.

Speaking of Agent Carter, Hayley Atwell has been cast for another ABC pilot, where she plays a former President's daughter who is blackmailed into joining a team of lawyers, investigators and forensic experts in order to investigate cases where the wrong person might have been convicted. "Conviction." Anyway, relevant to this thread, such as it is, would be that if it does blow into a full series, it might jeopardize future seasons of Agent Carter.

Arrow: "Hey Mr Willing To Do Anything To Get What You Want Evil Warlord, I have the item you've been torturing, enslaving, killing countless people and proving you'd do absolutely anything for. Of course I'll just reach out from this cage you've got me in with it and show you instead of staying just out of reach within the confines of my prison to make sure it can't be easily taken from my grasp leaving me with nothing to negotiate with considering you need me alive and unharmed to keep Oliver alive to ultimately complete your nefarious plans." It's like movies don't exist in shows where these cliches happen.

So disbanded League of Assassins ... what exactly do they put on their resumes now that they're out of work? Is there a hench trade program of some sort? Internships? I guess maybe AIM Hydra HIVE would be hiring ... which is exactly where Malcolm went as I was writing this witticism.

Lee Majors and, which was bound to happen eventually, Ted Raimi are being brought onboard for the next season of Ash vs Evil Dead. Majors as Ash Sr and Ted as a childhood best friend that managed to survive the original night or wasn't there or ... something. I'm still a little lost on the whole timeline. James Gunn, on the other hand, insists that there will be no Thanos or Infinity Stones in the next Guardians, which sure, why not? Already had one, and while Thanos is more their territory not an issue. I'm actually most curious about the mystery new cast member and the soundtrack. Amy Gumenick to return to Arrow as Cupid ... which is from one of the seasons I didn't watch I'm sure.

Allegedly the final Batman v Superman trailer.

I think Arrow remains the least interesting of the three parts of this Universe. Flash is still top of my list. LoT just doesn't have enough yet to make a big impression compared to the other two.

Only a couple more days til Deadpool. Will likely see it early Saturday afternoon.

The end of my Vacation Year is coming up, and I have 23 vacation days to use. So I'm taking every Friday off from next week until June. Will probably use the time to see some movies I've been meaning to, if they are still in the theaters.

A winter storm moving through northern Michigan... Drive home was pretty much white out.

If it's like this tomorrow I may not go to the theaters.

I made the mistake last year of going to the theater (right around this time too... valentine's day) for the release of Kingsman. Was nice out when I left. When I got out of the theater it was a blizzard. A 13 minute, 7 mile drive took me about an hour. Something like 10 mph with my hazards flashing the whole way. No one could see anything.
