Under the Dome starts up its second season on Monday. I enjoyed the first season enough that I'll be checking out season 2.

The Last Ship on TNT started up around the same time as Falling Skies, I think. I've only watched one episode of it, but it's enough to get me interested. Virus decimates the world population, a US ship out on a mission is spared, and may have the cure.

Tonight on HBO The Leftovers start up. I know nothing of the source materials, so I don't know if it's going to be a religious rapture event or just some alien thing. I'll watch it either way, plus HBO, so I'm sure ********

Also, apparently Spartacus is starting to air on Sci-Fi. I guess they'll be able to get their 15-20 minutes worth of commercials in a 60 minute time slot just by cutting out all the nudity and sex?

I gave up about halfway through the first season. Liked the book, the show just isn't doing it for me. I gave up on Falling Skies about the time Locke from Lost showed up.

I'll give it a go. The 9th Doctor in an HBO show? Sign me up!

Really looking forward to The Strain, loved the first book, and hate-watching True Blood. Nothing else really exciting coming up for me until Dr. Who in August.

I didn't watch The Leftovers, I wanted to watch the Penny Dreadful finale. I'll catch it on On Demand.

I also saw the first ep of The Last Ship and it was good. I'll be watching that and Falling Skies while I try and figure out what's going on with this season. Smiley: motz

And I'll be watching Under the Dome again as well. My other summer shows are Ray Donovan, The Bridge and The Newsroom. I might check out The Strain and Tyrant also.

I thought The Strain was going to be another ebola-virus outbreak thing. But I saw an extended trailer for it when I went to see the new Transformers movie (odd, right, TV series trailer before a movie? Never seen that before). Turns out it's a vampire epidemic show. I was going to watch it either way, but now at least it is a bit new to me.

I've got to watch the last couple episodes of Penny Dreadful. I never got my DVR set up to record it (and remind me) so I will just watch it on demand.

You'll not be disapointed in Penny Dreadful.

Just watched The Leftovers. Wow. Really liked it. This might be my fav summer show.

I'm on the fence with The Leftovers. But if you say it's good, maybe I'll have to try it out. I just don't have enough time and there are too too many shows on! Smiley: motz

Watched the season start of Under the Dome. Well, kinda clear who didn't pass the contract negotiations, I guess. Smiley: yikes

I wasn't overly impressed by it. But will watch it to see if it gets better. The first episode didn't "WOW" me, but it wasn't bad.

Was surprised by the splat. And didn't think that it was moving fast enough to be an instakill. Seems like it was very survivable.

Leftovers: What we always figured. Nailing hot Asian jail bait gives you magical powers. Story is moving kind of slow. Interesting things so far involve Black Guy cult leader and Cop going crazy with the strange packs of dogs. Silent cult is pretty boring, and unfortunately the focus of a lot of the episode.

Last Ship: Liking it so far. Nice little action/suspense sequence with the last episode and the Americans vs the Russians. Turns out the Russians have a person who is naturally immune the the virus. They weren't lying when they said they had something the doctor needed.

Anyone else get a "Navy recruitment video" feel from Last Ship? Dunno, it has a serious Top Gun vibe going on. Lots of gung ho. I'm sure they are required to present a certain degree of positive imagery of the Navy as part of the deal. Not that this is a bad thing, but it's just how these things tend to work. Stargate had the same requirements with the Air Force, which is why SGU could not use actual uniforms (that show didn't portray the officers in a light the military would want). To be fair though, the action has been pretty good, and I haven't seen anything that has too far stretched suspension of disbelief. Well, the whole aluminum foil thing (which would technically work, but it wouldn't magically make the ship disappear as well). That and the question of how they fished the two out of the water, given they were like 100 feet or so from the enemy ship at the time (doable, but they just hand waved it away off scene). But aside from those minor bits, it's been reasonable.

Leftovers is only two episodes in, so I'll allow for some boring story-telling time. I know they don't want to give away too much too soon, but I wish we knew more about the GR. Also, I was kind of hoping he wouldn't find his bagels Smiley: laugh

Last Ship: Borderline dying from dehydration to partying on the beach in a couple hours. Those chutes worked a little too well as sails too. I still have hopes, just not too many at the moment. Seems like it might go the route of Last Resort (never got into that one, and it didn't last). Maybe it will survive.

I didn't watch the Leftovers yet, I watched The Strain instead. Enjoyed the Pilot of that one. Three shows at 10pm on Sunday now...

Watched the pilot of The Strain. It was good. There were a couple of surprises that were actually decently surprising (as in, either didn't totally see them coming 8 miles away and/or were pulled off well enough that even though you saw them coming you were still like "oh crap!", when it happened). I like the idea of vampirism they're going with, but I'm hoping they fill us (the audience) in on the limitations. The danger of this sort of story is that it if you accept the premise, then it actually becomes unbelievable that the good guys have any chance of success at all (and you wonder why the bad guys didn't succeed long ago). We'll see how they explain that. I'm sure that's the primary role of the Abraham character.

It was good enough to make me continue watching it. I'm kinda done with most vampire shows (been way way way overdone). But this is enough of a different take that it may just work.

I tried to start watching the Left-overs last week. It didn't have sufficient juice to keep me tuned in through the commercials. Maybe I'll try The Strain.

Smiley: confused

It's an HBO show, there are no commercials.

Edit:
The Strain did have at least one thing happen that I did not expect. Sean Astin's character betraying the CDC and letting the vampire's coffin out of the airport. I didn't expect it to go down that way until he walked up to the Van and interrupted the man being questions.. I'm looking forward to more. I think the whole "Soon to be divorced dad who loves his wife and son but can't abandon his really important job" thing might get a little "bleh." but it looks like the Vampire thing will be enough to override that.

A coworker of mine didn't think too highly of the last episode of the Last Ship. The large chutes used as sails. They didn't even tie them up to the antenna mast or anything, just a single tether to the ship's deck...

Not to ruin The Strain, as I've read the books (the first one is pretty good but the last two decline in quality), but this is NOT in any way shape or form a "traditional" guy learns to slay vampires and saves the world kind of story. Its like they wrote these books to be the anti True Blood/Twilight. They may change it for TV, but I really hope they don't.

I thought it was a little slow, with a couple of quintessential Guillermo del Toro scenes thrown in. I have high hopes, provided they don't drag things out too much.

Yup. That was exactly the bit that I didn't expect. Not because of plot reasons, but the actor.

Hopefully, it's just enough character to make him/them "real", but the focus will be on dealing with all the "bad things(tm)" that are going to happen.

That whole bit was a lot of "huh? what?". I get in theory what they were trying to show happening, but I'm just not sure it would actually work like that. Physics is a *****.

I've been watching The Wil Wheaton Project on SyFy, it's a lot better than I thought it would be. If you're not familiar, it's Wil Wheaton standing around covering the past week's worth of geek news and culture and generally making fun of stuff. It's surprisingly funny. Considering the general audience of this website, I'm a bit shocked that I haven't seen it mentioned before now.

I was going to check it out, but it just came at a bad time for the show format. Seemed to be playing on the popularity of the Talking Dead, and then that forced Falling Skies after-hour show, Second Mass? (hosted by Wil Wheaton, if I remember).

I saw the ads for it, but didn't think much of it, and never set my DVR to record.

Sounds like Talk Soup or something.

Ok... Strain is good. Definitely the best out of all the current shows I'm watching.

Tonight's episode
An army of "good" vampires just showed up. But a "no exceptions" good. They saved a housekeeper/nanny, her daughter, and two kids. But the daughter had a cut from one of them. Bam, no exceptions.

Definitely an interesting twist. Pretty much a "wow" moment. Seems there is a group of vampires out there opposing Eichorst and his Master. Which I wonder if that means there is another Master? Or are these just people who were strong enough to oppose the Master's influence and keep their humanity, like Eichorst himself, but not a German **** *******.

Yeah. That was an interesting twist. No clue how exactly they'll fit in with the main characters yet, but I'm happy that this at least answers the question of "why didn't the bad guys win ages ago" that I brought up earlier. My current totally premature theory is that the virus that creates vampirism doesn't normally behave the way the Master's does. It does not spread so easily (maybe actually requires a deliberate effort to infect someone rather than anyone alive or dead infected becoming a vampire or one form or another), and does not allow for the kind of mental control that the Master seems to be able to exert on his spawn. I'm thinking that the Master represents a new strain of the virus which has these capabilities and the other vampires fight against him because he's as much a threat to them as to the humans.

Or, it's something totally different. Smiley: clown

Is it just me, or is Under the Dome rapidly turning into Lost2? Not sure if I'm going to continue watching it. To much drama for drama's sake, and way too much of the "new totally bizarre thing appears, then morphs into new new totally bizarre thing, then morphs again, and we're never actually going to explain any of it, but just keep making more crap up until people stop watching". Or is it just me? Doesn't seem like the story is actually moving anywhere. Just adding new elements to keep things changing (just like Lost did). I keep thinking they're going to explain something, but they just keep adding more things. Kinda getting annoying.
