Red Junction, by Kile NorbyFollow

So, one of my good friends, Kile, finally finished writing his novel. Red Junction is a horror novel set in 1800's western US. I'll paste his synopsis here:

Quote:
First and foremost, Red Junction is a horror novel, because any time there are flesh-eating shamblers lurking in the woods for greater than two hundred pages--you've penned a horror novel. It's more than just that, though. This is an honest-to-God western saga. It's also crude, and funny as hell.

This is the story of a boomtown born of the Pikes Peak Gold Rush during the 1850's. It is a town where the construction of the brothel was completed before the doctor's office, and the sheriff's star comes with a death sentence.

In this wild corner of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, peace is only afforded at the whim of the violently entrepreneurial Rex Westman--rumored to be the ******* son of a Guinea prostitute and a grizzly bear. Since the town's inception his formidable will has served as sufficient guidance, but when cannibalistic ghouls start wandering in from the outlying mining encampments even the devil Rex Westman may fail to maintain order in his cultivated den of iniquity.

If I had to describe the novel while dropping as many names as possible, I'd say it's Deadwood meets The Walking Dead.

It's The Walking Deadwood. Plus, all the sodomy of Oz.

Anyway, there are some excerpts here, as well as a link to the Kickstarter page for those interested.

No, I didn't.

It's a post about a book, in the appropriate forum. There have been posts in General Gaming about upcoming games that people are interested in that feature Kickstarter funding. If you want, I can take out the line asking people to pledge, but aside from that, what's the issue?

Edit: I removed the direct link to the Kickstarter page in my post.

Out of curiosity, what is the Kickstarter policy exactly? Is it all considered advertising? Only when you know someone involved with the project, or perhaps are involved yourself? Is mentioning that there's a Kickstarter okay, but not linking it?

It's already been discussed, the have been Kickstarters linked here a few times (a current one is linked in the General Gaming discussion) and other posters posting other products they've tried to sell, but it's because it's BT, plain and simple.

Thank you to everyone who wants to check it out!

Ah, I must have missed the discussion of why, though I did know that your link got nuked. I was just curious because I've linked a kickstarter before(one I didn't have any kind of connection to other than really liking the project) and wanted to make sure I wouldn't be breaking any rules if I did so again in the future. I just kinda assumed it was because of you having a personal connection to the project.

A forum rules amendment regarding kickstarter is pending. But basically we are considering it advertising. It will probably get the survey posting rule treatment.

Guenny, if you really want to push this issue, we can do that. I would advise you not to push the issue, but it is entirely your choice as always. Amongst other things barkingturtle made his choice.

You could theoretically treat any linking of out-of-network sites as advertising, especially the "vote for my spouse/relative/friend" threads that pop up in the OOT and Asylum on occasion.

I'm sorry, Kaolian, please enlighten me. What have I done to **** you off lately? Are you still holding a grudge for banning my husband over a year and a half ago? Because, he hasn't done **** to you, or these boards, since then. I haven't broken any rules either, but you seem hellbent on making sure I do.

My original intent when I posted this link was not to **** you off, contrary to your perception. I followed the rules, and just wanted to share something that the community might be interested in. Regardless, I personally am tired of you threatening me for not breaking the rules in various threads. I don't think I've ever received a PM from you regarding my behavior, or any rules I've broken... maybe you've sent me one when you were mad at Barkingturtle, but I really am not sure what you are threatening me about this time.

Maybe i am reading too much into comments you have made. That or maybe the tone you are intending to convey is not the same as my read on it. I realize it is difficult to judge tone from text and perhaps i am assigning more weight to your comments than you intended. From my perspective you take constant oppeetunity to comment on the barkingturtle thing, and it gets old. If that wasnt your intent then i will try not to read such an intent into it in the future.

How much for a couple square inches between the "Quote" and "Reply" buttons?

What differentiates a Kickstarter thread from a thread about any other product people are interested in? What makes it an advertisement over a thread about a new video game that contains an Amazon.com link? How is it different from linking to a contest or other vote-based event, and asking people to vote for a specific thing?

This is your delusion. I have been over "the barkingturtle thing" for over a year. I'd challenge you to find some references to my apparently constant barrage of harassment towards you, because I know in the less than 1,000 posts I've made since he's been banned, I've gone out of my way to avoid engaging you, because I get this. The only reason I'm even questioning your decisions or taking it any further is because you started antagonizing me in this instance. I followed the rules, and just because you don't like me you petition for and institute another one. This is the second time this has happened. If there is one thing that gets me riled up, it's being accused of being a rulebreaker when I spend a stupid amount of energy making sure I'm not going to step on anyone's toes by doing something incorrectly.

I'm glad you came out and admitted that it was mostly just a problem with the way you perceive me, though. I'd really hate for other people to not be able to link kickstarters or their own/family/friend's products just because my husband decided to sell something.

It's a moot point in this instance, anyway, since Kile's been contacted by parties interested in publishing his work traditionally. Really, right about now the worst thing that could happen would be reaching his goal on Kickstarter and being forced to self-publish, instead. Smiley: lol

I could go back and find and link all the prior comments and instances. I really don't feel like doing that though. There are enough of them, so you should be really, really ******* careful about calling me delusional over that. If its one thing that pisses me off, it's someone on very thin ice deciding to see how far she can push things with posts along those lines. Regarding the forum rules, understand that there is no petition process. I write them, I generally open them up for public comment, then I implement them.

I suspect because it's a direct solicitation for money. It's kinda like the difference between linking to a political candidates positions page and linking to his donations page. The former is part of a discussion, which presumably is the point of a forum like this, while the latter is just asking for money.

It's more like linking to a candidate's platform page which also has a link to donate to their campaign. The whole point is to raise awareness and solicit support, monetary and otherwise.

Yeah. I think it's not always going to be super cut and dried, but the degree to which you veer away from "here's this interesting book/game/idea/whatever, what do you guys think?" and towards "here's this interesting book/game/idea/whatever, please spend money" is going to be a big factor in terms of whether it's ok.

I'd imagine it has more to do with who has a financial interest in the link. Linking to say, a donation to the red cross would be ok, or say here that Ugly has in his sig, whereas a solicitation to a kickstarter, etsy or ebay site for yourself wouldn't be.
