The ship sinks at the end.

But seriously, I was tired of the whole 3D gimmick when it started. It seemed like nothing more than a way to make more money (and it is). Titanic just is a particularly egregious example of that.

It will die down. It has before, and it probably will again.

Avatar was cool in 3D, as was Transformers 3. Other than that, I haven't seen any really "cool" uses of it. Maybe the credits of Thor, but more so because I'm an Astronomy geek. The actual 3D in the Thor movie itself was laughable.

I think both Spidey & the Avengers were shot in 3D, so I'll give them a chance. I'd only see Titanic in 3D if I can be assured Cate Winslett's boobs are fully rendered.

I can't believe they made the entire movie in 3D just for the part where the dude caroms off the propeller.

3D is new. And just like everything else that was new, it's initially marketed as a curiosity and exploitation media. This is exactly how animation started.

It's gimmicky partly because gimmicky is still marketable, and partly because it hasn't been developed as a medium. Early films were gimmicky as well. The use of cuts and continuity wasn't well understood, so you had odd films where scene of people leaving a train would include the entire duration of people leaving a train without cuts implying a passage of time. 3D films are incredibly expensive to produce and so there are both very few pieces as well as the inability to freely experiment with the idea due to the immense cost involved. Avant garde 3d isn't as great of a presence and therefore the medium remains largely undeveloped.

3D films look to be the future of the medium and not merely a passing fad, but it will take time.

3D new? It's been around since 1915. Hardly new. It's a fad that comes up and disappears again after a while.

When they are actually filmed with the proper equipment, 3D can be pretty amazing (unless you are like me and have a head way too big for the glasses, and are somewhat prone to getting nauseous from it*). Toy Story 3, for instance, was actually absurdly impressive in 3D.

But I've yet to be impressed with a film that had 3D added to it later. But to be completely fair (because I actually hope this is a factor), it's been a long time since I went to see a 3D movie that wasn't designed for it.

*It's touch and go for me in theaters. I'm never afraid of actually puking, but it can definitely make me uncomfortable. I can't even use the 3DS though--a minute trying the thing and I needed to put it down.

That's been around for years.

I've seen a small handful of movies in the theaters with 3D, and the only one I really remember is Avatar. It was pretty cool, although the most impressive thing I remember was how the HUD stood out with the 3D. The rest of it is kind of blurry in my memory, although granted that was 2 years ago, so that's probably why.
