My husband convinced me to drive back into Nashville last night and see Tree of Life at the Belcourt Theater. I had to do this because there are no other theaters showing this movie around us. I found out why that was last night.

I expected to go to see a movie. You know, actors, situations, plot, climax, resolution, all that fun stuff. I ended up seeing a two hour and fifteen minute art house film. I disliked it pretty hard, but I think if I had been better prepared going in, it wouldn't have made me rage so much.

First of all, it was gorgeous. There are some incredibly stunning scenes of galaxies and nebulae, what looked like it was supposed to be the surface of the sun, and the "beginning of the world." It even had dinosaurs!! Smiley: rolleyes I could've done without the strange whispered phrases and sentences while this was going on, though.

Second, the parts with actual actors was good. The characters were interesting, I liked them, and that's another part of why this movie made me angry. I would've really enjoyed a movie about them and what happened to them and how it was either resolved or never resolved. But no, that would be too simple for Terrence Malick.

Third, the beach scenes were very pretty, again, but I feel they were too much. I sort of felt like he was pounding the point home too hard. I get what you're saying, Malick. Maybe you could've turned this into an hour and a half and left some of that **** for the Director's Cut, no?

Anyway, you've been warned. If you like artsy movies, this is a good one. I think if I watch it a second time, I'll be able to appreciate it more. But it was not what I was expecting, so I was a bit peeved by that.

Also: At the end of the film, some guy in the back burst out laughing, and I was surprised with how many people joined in.

Yes, I was one of them.

I tend to have a love/hate relationship with Malick films. Given that I'm a big fan of astronomy stuff, I think I'll like Tree of Life, but I've heard that a lot of people don't (in fact, a lot of people walked out at Cannes).

Thor was really good for astronomy stuff. I regret I didn't see it in 3-D, for those bits. The rest, apart for the scene with him striding around with his shirt off, I could have done without.

Wait, where do you live now?

It's a perfectly honest and not at all creepy stalkerish question.
