Oh noes, Disney movie! Smiley: laugh

So Saturday night, after spending the day being terribly sick, I went on a movie date with my girlfriend to see Tangled, Disney's take on Rapunzel. I'll admit, I usually enjoy Disney movies - I'm a sucker for the old early 90's movies like Beauty & the Beast, Aladdin, and Little Mermaid. I've only seen a few new ones, namely The Princess and the Frog and Enchanted, and while I enjoyed both of them, they weren't quite as good as the old favorites. Probably nostalgia taking me over.

Then I saw Tangled, and I loved it. The entire thing was amazing. The songs were cute, the animation was fantastic, and the voice acting was top-notch. I really shouldn't gush, but the two main characters are some of my favorite less popular personalities - Mandy Moore is Rapunzel (loved A Walk to Remember, and "Only Hope" from it still gives me goosebumps), and I couldn't place who Flynn was for the entire movie until I read the credits and it clicked: Zach Levi, aka Chuck Bartowski from Chuck! The music was great, the action was fast-paced, the animals were appropriately cute and hilarious, especially Pascal. My only issue is I doubt the studio will make back the reported $260 million (second most expensive movie of all time) it cost to create this awesome film, meaning a sequel or another movie of this caliber is very unlikely. That said, I will definitely buy this on DVD when it comes out, and I recommend going to see it.

Also, I saw it in 2D, not 3D. Not sure how much of a difference the 3D would have made.

Yeah, I really want to see this movie. My husband has said he'd go with me. I'm not sure if he means it yet, though. ;)

I have heard that Disney's not planning to make another "princess" movie for a while. They wan't to move more towards things that boys and girls both like, and what I heard is that a lot of little girls aren't into the princess thing anymore.

If he doesn't want to go, you can join the gf and I, as we have both been looking forward to it but haven't had a chance to see it yet. :P

Loved it as well. In my opinion Rapunzel made the movie, or at the very least was by far the strongest character. She's fifty different kinds of adorable. My opinion my be slightly biased though because she reminds me very much of a girl I know who I basically think is the bees' knees. I also quite liked the two thugs, probably because they were just straight up bad. No comedy was attempted with them; they weren't the typical goofy incompetent henchmen. Many of the other characters I felt were too weak. Flynn wasn't the best take on a the satirical charmer, but I did very much like the back story that reveals it's all an act added a much needed new angle to his character. I thought they would do something interesting with the old woman, in that perhaps she grew to genuinely care for Rapunzel, but she ends up being a very bland villainess. I thought Maximillian and Pascal were characters that tried too hard, and they didn't work for me. I also need to mention again just how great of a character I think Rapunzel is.

I liked the early song sung by Rapunzel in her room, but didn't much care for the others, though I did think Donna Murphy did an excellent job singing what was written for her. As for comedy, the over-the-top physical humor moments fell completely flat for me--such as flint swinging on Rap's hair into a wooden wall. However, some of the more subtle physical comedy and lines were top notch. I liked Rapunzel hitting herself in the head as she admires her pan skills, and Flynn remarking on how a his duel against the horse is the strangest thing he's ever done worked very well with me.

I've been reduced to watching shoddy recordings from handheld cams of this movie, so I will repeat... it's freaking awesome. I'm thinking of shelling out the extra three bucks to see it in 3D tomorrow. In case you're still debating out there, here's an example of the first song, "When Will My Life Begin?". Not even a particularly strong song (the bar song and the love duet later on are great, and the "Mother Knows Best" song and reprise are great within the movie), but it's still completely solid. I LOVE Mandy Moore's voice!

Ok, ending my gushing now Smiley: lol
