Funimation has been hyping the hell out of this series on their Facebook news stream and I've seen a little bit about it on TVTropes, so I'm curious about it(though Funimation isn't actually releasing it til September). Anyone seen it and care to tell me what you think of it? Or if you haven't seen the anime, have you read the webcomic/manga and have some insight?

Just curious, mostly.

For anyone who has no idea what I'm talking about:

Hetalia: Axis Powers (ヘタリア Axis Powers , Hetaria Akushisu Pawāzu?) is a webcomic, later adapted as a manga and an anime series, by Hidekaz Himaruya (日丸屋秀和, Himaruya Hidekazu?). The series presents an allegorical interpretation of political and historic events, particularly of the World War II era, in which the various countries are represented by anthropomorphic characters. Hetalia (ヘタリア?) is a portmanteau combining heta (へタ?, Japanese for "incompetent") and Italia (イタリア?).[1] This is to make light of Italy's apparent cowardice during World War II.

Himaruya originally created Hetalia as an online webcomic, and so far three tankōbon have been published by Gentosha Comics, the first on March 28, 2008, the second on December 10, 2008, and the third on May 20, 2010. The series was later adapted into drama CDs, and an anime series created by Studio Deen has also begun streaming online. On January 8, 2010, the anime series' international distribution was announced to be handled by Funimation Entertainment.

The main historical events portrayed in this work occur between World War I and World War II. The series often uses satire and comedy to address well-known historical events as well as historical and cultural trivia. Historical political and military interaction between countries is allegorically represented in Hetalia as social and romantic interaction between the characters; the webcomic version in particular depicts military and economic incursions using various innuendo.

And I do have to say I get a kick out of some of the jokes I've already seen references to, such as:
Quote:
In the anime series, he<Pold's Note: America> is voiced by Katsuyuki Konishi in Japanese and Eric Vale in English, both of whom also voice Canada.

It's supposed to be pretty @#%^in lulzy.

I watched a couple episodes a few months ago, and got a few laughs out of them.
They tend more towards silly comedy, with lots of references to history (as expected, really).

Maybe I'll download it and watch the series before I move in a few weeks. I only skipped it because I had so many other series I was watching at the time.

Edit: Downloading it right now.

I only know about Hetalia as an allusion and meme. I suppose I should check it out, but the culture surrounding it is particularly creepy.

It really kinda is.

Has a huge slash following.

Nothing is quite so weird as two of your friends, dressed up as male anthropomorphic personifications of America and England, posing while kissing so that other people can take pictures of them and squee. (Now, when it's two girls dressed up as America and England kissing, then it goes from weird to hot, but I couldn't find any of those pictures even though I know they exist out there somewhere.)

Edit: Link failure.

It's even better when you've actually seen Jungle wa Itsumo Hare Nochi Guu.

Didn't England raise America in this series?

And is it just me or does that make it creepier?
