Lol, looks like all the bases have pretty much been covered. Having read over the posts I'm surprised no one said Tenchi, though I would consider it more comedic then anything. If it was mentioned, my bad, I missed it.

In terms of Mecha anime, the Gundam series pretty much has you covered (though Gundam Wing is a personal fave). It would also be worth it to check out the Gundam Wing movie Endless Waltz. Also, Code Geass is pretty entertaining, though I felt it didn't put as much emphasis on the mechs as opposed to Gundam, but then again I've only recently started watching it so my presumption may be off.

In terms of action/comedy I would recommend Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, and Rorouni Kenshin as well as many of the others that were mentioned above. I don't know how interested you are in actually reading, but IMO a lot of manga's are just as good if not better then the anime. Perfect example, in the Trigun manga the story is so much more in depth, with more characters, as well as more background information. In terms of action, it doesn't get much more action oriented then have a guy named Razlo the Tri-punisher of death, who can simultaneously wield three punisher crosses (Wolfwoods gun).

Just thought I'd throw out my opinion on Grave, TGWLTT, and School Days.

Watched Grave of the Fireflies shortly after posting my previous list, and it was as sad as people have said. The whole movie I had that "inevitable" feeling, because you know after the opening scene what's going to happen and nothing can stop it.

After Grave I watched The Girl Who Leapt Through Time which was another emotional movie (you'd think I would be smart enough to not basically marathon sad anime after sad anime). The whole coming from the future twist kind of felt out of place, but it made the ending possible and enjoyable.

Finally, I marathoned School Days today and... just wow. It started out with a kind of Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien feeling which I liked; I felt frustrated with the middle namely because Makato started sleeping with anything on two legs, and took half the series to tell kotonoha he was breaking up with her. The ending is one of the most shocking endings I've ever seen in anime (I also learned where "Nice Boat" came from ;3). I expected Kotonoha to do something crazy because she was obviously unstable... but wow. I didn't expect Sekai to be the one to kill Makato; and then that final scene with Kotonoha laying on the boat with Makato's head....

here's the thing Code Geass was like the omgawesome of animes that i liked however gundam was so-so for me i kind of like the combination of mecha AND the death notelike/strategy/dramatic...something that was in code geass (the only problem is i dont recall any that have those besides i think neon genesis?

I completely agree with you on the whole Gundam being so-so thing. The last Gundam I truly enjoyed was Wing and the movie, Endless Waltz. Gundam SEED, SEED Destiny, 00 S1 & 2 just seem to be following the same generic mecha plot line nowadays. I'm getting a bit tired of the good guys winning just because they're not normal humans.

Hmm, no love for "Outlaw Star"? I'm rather disappointed in you folk.

Might be a few days late, but it is nice to see someone post Outlaw Star, as I was about to.

I have enjoyed:

FLCL
Outlaw Star
Cowboy Bebop
Rurouni Kenshin
Trigun

And I am a fan of DB and DBZ (gt is junk, imo).

All of the above is old stuff. As I have been out of the anime world for years. But this is the stuff I enjoyed and still like to watch.

So no one has watched G-Gundam, it's probably the only one that doesn't follow the standard Gundam template. No genetically altered humans, no colonies rebelling against Earth, just fighters vs fighters in giant robot suits.

Also if you seen Outlaw Star make sure you watch Angel Links, it's a spin-off from OS episode 19 with the private security forces.

well a little update i've gone slightly out of Code geass type anime and currently watching...

ouran highschool host club - it's pretty funny

**************** be spelled wrong) - if u havnt seen it it's a mix of comedy/horror i guess where there's a butler and a master and the butler kills people with silverware (at least in one episode ^^)

Darker then Black - This is pretty good it's hard to explain the story so i'd look it up XD (its like ...um...people have powers and kill stuff!...ya >.>;)

the downside is these are only 20-30 episode shows so i'll probly finish them quiet sooner x.x

Now a lot of the suggestions i've seen are pretty good (i did look at a few of them but havnt checked the recent ones). Something i did notice though was that a few had an oldish look to it which is ok! I just usually prefer anime that looks more like Code geass/other anime i've listed over things that are either oldish looking or to realistic...(yes i know that's probly a lame thing but i find the story/emotions of characters a lot better when i watch these types...)

Death Note and FLCL.

You will die laughing and be scared sh*tless. Probably not in that order.

That is all.

I didn't feel like making a new thread, asking the same question, so here goes.

So far I've watched and enjoyed:

Elfen Lied
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Seto no Hanayome
Lucky Star
Azumanga Daioh
Gundam 00
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (Kai)[Rei 1,2,3]

Mostly comedies and high school life anime. I'm looking for more mystery/suspense anime like Higurashi, preferably with animation styles similar to the anime I've already seen.
If you have more comedies or romance anime that I'd like, I'll gladly take suggestions for those too.

Thanks in advance :D

Death Note may not have a similar animation style, but it's recent and is a very strong suspense series. Code Geass has strong elements of Suspense and drama, but I wouldn't consider it to be a strictly suspense series; it's more of a gumbo. Monster is a dark mystery and suspense series, lacking any of the light heartedness of Higurashi. Monster is a very different kind of story style than what you are used to seeing, so it may not fit your tastes. I can't think of any more suspense series.

If you like school life comedies I'd recommend School Rumble and Ouran High School Host Club. In my opinion they top the list of school life comedies. However, Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu is the funniest series I have ever seen, and at 13 episodes it's very easy to get into.

Thanks, I'll definitely take a look at the ones you suggested.

I'm not sure what it is with the style, but I loved the first anime I watched (Elfen Lied) and ever since, I have trouble getting into anime that's not similarly styled.

If you want some exposure to more unusual art styles I would suggest checking out Kemonozume, Kaiba, and Gankutsuou.

I strongly encourage you to try to get into more genres of anime and art styles. Here are some more A+ shows you should give a chance.

Fullmetal Alchemist (BTW Brotherhood is out and it's the anime done more closely to the manga)
-Probably at the top of many lists. This anime really delivers as far as story and characters go. It's not really suspenseful, but has a couple of twists here and there. It's a show where you root for the main characters and such and you feel like they are facing impossible odds.

Clannad + Clannad After Story
-This is one of the best romance animes I've seen. It's better than Chobits and that's saying a lot. The mix of humor and drama in the anime is pretty well done. It's based on one of those japanese videogames, so there are references to it (and it's done in a rather humorous style). I admit the show is kind of predicable, but it does not take much away from it.

NANA
-This is a pretty amazing show. It's probably best described as a Romance. It's one of the shows where you find it hard to choose which character you want to root for since all of them show signs of their good and bad. Of all the shows this one has a lot of "soap opera" potential.

Darker than BLACK
-I was very surprised how much I liked this show. The pace was dead on and it had just the right amount of comic relief. Not quite a full out action show. I suppose you could compare this more to like a Cowboy Bebop than anything.

Baccano!
-One of the best shows I've seen, ever. While it's short (12 episodes + 3 OVAs which could count as 13-15) it has a intricate story of how the characters from different backgrounds get connected with each other. (Think Crash). The show also has one of the best opening sequences I've seen for an anime.

Those are just a few to get to work on. Feel free to PM me if you want my opinion on a specific series. I've seen quite a bit of anime and I'm always happy to share my knowledge.

Cool, I really appreciate the help.
I just finished downloading Gankutsuou, so I'll be starting on it sometime tomorrow.

I watched up to Episode 10 in Baccano! last night, loved every one of them :D

I'm debating on staying up and finishing the series now, or waking up later today and watching them before work.

I think if you liked Baccano! you will like Gankutsuou. That is not to say they are similar stories, but they are both heavily character driven.

Thank you!!! No one ever drops that name, and he's totally right! Lot's of blood, violence, etc. though, so if you're the squeamish type, it may be best to stay away... =P The story is sooo deep, and gets wayyy deeper in the manga too... (So if you're looking for a long read, give that a go... It's still going and has been for like 20 years now...)

Listen to him too... Eva is amazing... =)

**Now, I haven't really cared about anime in years, but here are my recommendations:

~"FLCL" - You have no choice... Watch it! =P
~"Cowboy Beebop" was tons of fun
~"Trigun" was also tons of fun
~"Escaflowne" really strikes a chord with me...
~"Rurouni Kenshin" - Watch the series and especially watch the movies...
~"Jungle wa Itsumo Hare Nochi Guu" might be the funniest show ever... Really good! Give it a watch if you can find it... =)
~"Last Exile" looks amazing and the story is great
~"Haibane Renmei" - A more serious kind of anime, but I really enjoyed it... =)
~"Azumanga Daioh" - Maybe too girly for you, but I enjoyed it a bunch... Really funny... =)

I really hated Genshiken. I watched about 5 episodes of the first season and then just deleted everything.

I thought the series was going to be about anime fans. It's not. It's about Otaku. The kind of people who don't like anime because of a good story, but like it because it's anime. The kind of people who spend more money on figurines than they do on anime box sets. The characters in the show all watch and enjoy bottom tier generic anime. It was neither funny nor interesting.
