Picked up every Dresden book I could find and just finished reading the first one, Storm Front, and really enjoyed it. I'm starting on Fool Moon now.

Before reading the books, I was watching the new series on the SciFi channel. While there are some differences the show has with the novels, I think they still capture the essence of Harry Dresden pretty well.

Anyone else read the books or watch the show?

The books I've read I have enjoyed. I don't have the sci-fi channel so I haven't been able to see the show.

holy fuck I just realized I DO have the Sci-Fi channel!

Going for a bit of Battlestar Galactica info on the scifi channel has made me notice the show, but no scifi channel here, nor is that show aired here as yet.(took three years before for instance BSG gets aired here, so I'm not holding my breath for it)

A pity though, it looks rather good.
Guess I'll have to track down the books then.

They're both really good. I'd recommend them to anyone.

White night, the new one, comes out this Tuesday. ^_^

I'm on the 8th book now, "Proven Guilty" and I expect "White Night" to arrive on my doorstep next Tuesday from Amazon. Once I finish reading that, I'll start on Glen Cook's first book of the Garrett Files series, "Sweet Silver Blues."

Edit: White Night (hardback) and Sweet Silver Blues arrived on Saturday! Huzzah!

I read Storm Front when it first came out and can't remember if it made the final list of books noniated for the Compton Crook Award that year. I still have a copy and keep meanng to read the other books, but then between checking out new authors each year for BSFS.org and keeping up with favorite authors and next Balticon's GOH I never have enough time or money.

If I have any time before Balticon41, I plan on rereading some Niven and Pournelle. Only last week learn I was given a committe job for the con and trying to get 12 months of work done in 5 weeks.

By the way, that whole series was previously published, so you can find the rest of the books at used book stores, though they are fairly rare.

White Knight was good. I liked it.

Yay necro bump!

My two old college roommates loved the Dresden Files back in the day, and kept telling me to read them. I've been out of college for 3+ years now, and recently picked up the first three when I visited one of them on vacation. And I promptly devoured them. When I saw him again a couple of weeks ago, I picked up six more... and read them all in seven days. I now have the latest four, and have already finished one ("Small Favor").

I'm kicking myself for not picking them up earlier; the series is really fun. It's not amazing writing or anything, but there's humor, a lot of action, a huge cast of characters... and freaking wizards. It's Harry Potter meets Dirty Harry. Loving it.

I'm also tempted to try the audiobooks, as they are narrated by James Marsters (aka Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer). Anyone listen to them yet?

Bobdammit. I was quite excited during reading the OP when it mentioned a new Dresden series, then I looked at the date. Smiley: motz

These are on my list of requested Christmas/birthday gifts. I'm really hoping I get em.

My bad Smiley: grin

Finished "Turn Coat" and about halfway through "Changes." I don't like the style that the last two books have started (literally RIGHT in the middle of the action), but goddammit, "Changes" had the BEST introductory line of the entire series so far. MAJOR spoiler alert:
I answered the phone, and Susan Rodriguez said, "They've taken our daughter."

And it's been non-stop from there. Although I love the allegories going forward through the series, they've become pretty over-the-top. For example, we get the "White Council" relatively early on in the series... leading top 7 wizards. Then later on we get the Black Council, a shadowy sinister group that is still unverified... but probably exists. Then in the last couple of books, we have the Grey Council... which did Harry join? It's obvious. He's definitely been moving in a more morally ambiguous form. It reminds me of what he says to... er, his apprentice. You keep making the "right" choices, and pretty soon you realize you've been doing evil.

Ah well, I look forward to where it will go... although I only have one more book to read after this. Boo!

A few years ago SciFi made a show out of what I'm assuming was the first one or two books. I liked it, but apparently nobody else did because it only lasted one season. I thought about picking up the books, but since I already know a good bit of the first book at least, I've been waiting until I forget the details before reading them.

The TV show was substatntially different than the books. There were some crossover elements, but the stories were largely different. You shouldn't need to wait.

Now I need to wait for new ones to come out Smiley: glare

"Changes" was by far the most intense book so far. "Ghost Story" was ok, although it messed with the format of the previous books quite a bit (this one was all about flashbacks). Totally saw the very ending coming though... oh Mab...

Just finished Ghost Story. The first couple books were a bit rough, but they got substantially better as the series went along. Though I saw the ending coming a mile away, I like how not everything turns out rosy in the end for all of the characters. I actually think Butcher takes a bit of sick delight in tormenting hhis characters. It does make for good reading though. Now I just have to wait a few months for Cold Days to come out.
