Today as I was getting ready to leave work I noticed a voicemail was left on my phone. I rarely get them, as most people just email or message me these days. I checked it and it was a guy who just left his name, and a number to call him back at. Didn't mention what it was about, or who he worked for.

I did a search for his name and number, and the hit that came up was a professional recruitment place in Chicago. Some place that you higher to find talent for your business.

Now I'm sitting here thinking what will I do if I'm being offered a job...

I know that if I leave my hometown and go somewhere else I could make significantly more than I do now. But on the other hand I make good money for where I live. Close to family (at least, the ones that count). Own my home, mortgage free, and am well rooted in my current job. But... if they were to offer me anything similar to what I do now, with a significant pay increase, I'd have to seriously think about it.

I'd feel bad about leaving the company I work for currently though. Well, maybe not feel bad for the company, but for the people I would leave behind.

Of course, this is all just in my mind at the moment. I'll probably contact him back tomorrow. Never been contacted by a place like that before. I've not had my resume up anywhere, my only copy is about 8 years old sitting on my old desktop PC and very out of date. I've been working here for 9 years, going to shows, handing out my business card to people, etc. Just not sure why I get contacted now.

I guess if it turns out to be anything real, even if I don't accept it, I could use it as a bit of leverage for a pay increase where I currently work.

I only had a recruiter call me once, after I dropped my card into one of those "Win a free lunch!" fish bowls at a food counter. My current job did recruit me but that was via a former coworker who decided that I needed to come work for him versus a professional agency.

I've never dropped my card into those before. But usually only because I don't carry my cards around with me, they are always in my notebook for meetings.

So did you ever win a free lunch, or just a free phone call?

Edit:
Whether or not it ends up being a good offer, the whole thing has just made me start thinking about how much this convenient job is worth to me. The difference between my salary and the salary of people of an equal skill level. What is the whole "hometown, family, etc" worth to me. And I'm having a hard time answering that question.

My first job out of college, first job in my field. It'd definitely expanding, and the past few years after it got into new ownership, they have started giving me decent raises and bonuses. If things go the way the are now for the future, it may actually work out very well for me. Getting to stay in my home, and getting a decent wage increase. Plus lots of new stuff and travel as the company grows and opens plants all over the US and even other countries.

Just the phone call, I'm afraid. It wasn't from the restaurant, but I quickly surmised how they got my information.

No idea what's going on in your situation so I'll wish you best of luck.

At the very least you should get as much information as possible, and like you said: You can use it as leverage for a pay increase.

I contacted the guy. Someone (no names) in the State was looking to hire a project manager. No real details, a little bit of prying about what I'd be doing, seems like it wouldn't really have been what I was doing now. I mentioned I enjoyed building and programming machines, he kept at the "Ya, but would you like to move on in the future to a management position?". Not really... but it looks like someone is looking for an Electrical Engineer with Management dreams.

He left me his email address and told me to send him an updated resume for future reference.

Managerial positions can get a little boring, yes.
