Last year, with a raise and a sizable bonus due to some very long stays in a hotel working on a big project, I ended up making almost 20% more than what I had in previous years. Coupled with a dependent who is now employed and filing his own taxes, which I forgot to adjust on my W4. I ended up owing a big portion this year.

Edit:
I hate that "damn" is filtered.

To make a long story short, I don't take any responsibility for anything I post here. It's not news, it's not truth, it's not serious. It's parody. It's satire. It's bitter. It's angsty. Your mother's a *****. You like to jack off dogs. That's right, you heard me. You like to grab that dog by the bone and rub it like a ski pole. Your dad? Gay. Your priest? Straight. **** off and let me post. It's not true, it's all in good fun. Now go away.

It was almost as much as my property taxes though. I was expecting to break even -ish. I think last year I was within a hundred. And even the previous years I kept my over paying to a minimum. The only years I really got a lot back were a few years after college when I was able to take a pretty big deduction on my student loans due to some special rules.

I always heard that if you owed more than 1000, there were extra fees for not paying your taxes throughout the year. But my dad told me yesterday that usually you didn't get charged if your taxes were being taken automatically from your paychecks. So I guess that's good.

But if you earned 20% more money, you should have plenty sitting around in your bank account (or Scrooge McDuck style vault) to pay the extra taxes. So it's all good, right! Or... Oh. Did you increase your spending to match your increase in earnings like most people do? Human nature is a beotch, isn't it?

Na, my spending didn't increase much. I bought a tractor, but that's on a 0 APR, 5 year loan, so it's not like I needed anything extra for that.

The extra money was getting set aside for my garage build here this spring/summer.

So I guess the "damn" thought in my mind wasn't really because I didn't pay enough throughout the year, but that I have to pay more in general due to losing a dependent and head of household status.

It wasn't exactly a big one.
