while somewhat downplaying the fact that he's not being charged for "making stuff up on TV". He's being charged for falsifying information while working for various government agencies

It looks as though he only "worked for" the government as an independent contractor through third party agencies. He was charged with numerous attempts to falsify records while trying to obtain work/clearances which, given that he is currently under arrest and facing up to 35 years in prison, would suggest that the government did in fact do some background checking.

And he didn't "work" for Fox News at all. So why not make the story about these third party companies and their lack of vetting process? Surely you can see how this is more about attacking Fox News than it is about reporting the story. If the companies that hired him as a security expert didn't catch his false credentials, how the heck do you expect Fox to have done so? He's going to hand them the same bogus resume, right?

I also kinda love how the Left has jumped on this guy and his association with Fox, but my response when reading this was "who?". I'm sure he's appeared as an "expert" in some capacity on a few segments, but from the pictures I've seen, I don't recognize him, or his name. So in the vast number of people that Fox might put on the screen to comment on something, he's just one in the crowd at best.

I'm mean, it's not like this guy claimed to have come under fire while flying into Bosnia, or that an attack on an embassy building was the result of a video, or filed exit documentation asserting that she'd turned over all classified documents related to his work at the State Department, only to have kept them on his email server at home.

He was happy to give his "expert opinion" on all those things though Smiley: laugh

Sure. As well as a hundred other people, most of whom I'm assuming actually do have the credentials they provided. So... Him having made up his past does what to the narrative? That's right. Nothing at all. If a hundred people all say the same thing, and 99 of them actually are expert, but one of them is discovered to have just pretended to be, does that make what the other 99 said wrong? That's silly logic right there.

Quote:
Your knee-jerk defense of Fox News is noted, however.

As opposed to the knee-jerk attack on Fox News? I just responded to what I saw. I'd say the same thing regardless of news agency. It's not like he was a paid host, or an actual reporter. So I'm not sure what the issue is. OMG! We need to vet everyone we put on a "man on the street" segment, because they might not be who they claim to be. Maybe one of those college students we interviewed for the campus drinking segment wasn't really a student after all! Ah... The horror!

I just found it funny that the immediate and overwhelming approach to this story was to mention that he'd been on Fox news. Seemed obvious why that was the take on things.

Australians petition to have their currency name changed to "Dollarydoos" based on the 1995 episode of the Simpsons "Bart vs. Australia."

http://www.9news.com.au/national/2015/10/16/15/39/aussies-get-behind-proposal-to-change-currency-to-dollarydoos

Quote:
The slump in the price of key export commodities has dragged down economic growth and taken the Australian dollar with it. Thanks to Hawke and Keating's reforms the daily fluctuations in the dollar are now largely beyond government control but there is one shot in the locker a brave government can take to lift the struggling Aussie.

An online petition that has gained over 5000 signatures calls on the leaders of Australia's major parties to get behind a proposal to rename the currency "Dollarydoos".

"This will make millions of people around the world want to get their hands on some Australian currency due to the real life Simpsons reference, driving up the value of the Australian currency," the petition's author Thomas Probst argues.

"If the leaders of this great nation have any common sense at all, they will introduce legislation to parliament to change the name of our currency as soon as possible."

I tend to use the term a lot whenever something is particularly expensive or ridiculous. I never imagined it could potentially become a real word.

For a normal person, finding out an expert was actually lying about his qualifications should make you question his narrative. For someone who goes out of his way to describe himself as a skeptic should make you dismiss it, dismiss the organization that used his "expertise," and use it as an example of how untrustworthy the organization is.

Wait, is Captain America black now?

I haven't been keeping up with the comics, because, honestly, Captain America is the most boring superhero of all time, but wasn't he a white dude at some point?

Although, I guess having a black Captain America who stands up for the little guy instead of Uncle Sam... I can see why that would cause some people of conservative persuasion to lose their ****.

As I understand it, his speeches have been a bit cringeworthy. Some folks I know don't care that he's black, but are a little ticked with the way he's acting(again, something about a speech he made or something). And some conservatives I know aren't terribly happy with the new villains(a send up of anti-immigration cons). Here's a brief look at the villains.

Steve Rogers lost the Super Soldier Serum in his bloodstream (again) and turned old (as opposed to a cripple) so had to pass on the shield and name to someone that wasn't an octogenarian, and canonically Sam Wilson, the Falcon, has been his best and most trusted friend the longest time. Of course, Steve has been a Republican for the past decade and no one has really complained about that.

The Sons of the Serpent have only been a subversive organization of costumed American racist super-patriots who oppose all racial, ethnic, and religious minorities and sought to subvert America through hate crimes and organized protests since 1966, so also a totally new development.

I knew much of the first paragraph and have little problem with that(I'm not sure how one "loses" a super serum in their blood, but whatevs). And now that I know Sons of the Serpent is actually an old group and not a ham-fisted way of making sure you know who the bad guy is(I would have gone with a more nuanced "Sons of the Eagle" for my Ultra-conservative, anti-minority group), that's fine too.

I'm still not sure about the reported cringe-worthy dialogue, but again, haven't read it yet. Looking into options for reading comics that won't cut into my games and sci-fi book/dvd budgets too much.

While you're here, what's the deal with the new Hulk? Does it make sense, at least by comic book logic?

Oh, okay, they're pulling an Iron Patriot thing on him, yeah? The black sidekick takes on the mantle of the white master... okay, that came out wrong. The white mentor.

See, this is what I'm talking about. This is why the first Captain America movie was such a snooze fest. There's an entire section of the movie, right after he gets turned into a super soldier, that I just don't remember that well. Something, something, America is great, something, something, stand up to bullies, something, liberty and equality, because patriotism, or something. I don't even know. I guess that stuff appeals more to the US audience or the hardcore fanbase.

And now he's fighting racist protesters? I'm going back to bed - somebody wake me when he's back to fighting alien invaders, gods, artificial intellects, and, like, super-*****.

It's a speech about rationalized jingoistic racism done by an over-the-top super villain who is supposed to be seen as unquestioningly racist. I don't know how you could do that without making it cringe-worthy. If the writer really wanted to sting conservatives he'd have just used the Watchdogs (created '87), a group of ultra right-wing terrorists who were "dedicated to restoring traditional American culture and values" through censorship and repression, fighting against indecency, immorality, and sexual perversion. Mostly against porn and "teh gay". I don't remember the last time they've shown up, though. Amusingly enough, that was John Walker's initial super villain group when he took over as Captain America, so there's some precedence to Sam Wilson fighting Sons of the Serpent. This is what an unhealthy compulsion to read everything looks like.
Poldaran wrote:

Without getting into a whole ethics arguments that is what I rationalize as being perfectly acceptable behavior, there's Marvel Digital Unlimited (I think DC has a similar app) that's basically Netflix for comics at $10 a month, though I think there's like a six month delay between 0day/new releases and them showing up on Unlimited. Pretty good for getting into the backlog, though. I think Comixology sells individuals issues at like a dollar each, but I'm not sure what the release schedule for that is like.
Poldaran wrote:

Do you mean the Amadeus Cho Hulk? It hasn't started yet (December is the first issue according to Comixology's release list) so there's very little actual details, and like much of the new line it's a time skip from after the currently ending Secret Wars summer event so I can't really say. I mean, it probably makes sense for comic book logic, but then again with comic book logic Bruce Banner cured his ALS with pineapple juice, grave robbing, Pym Particles and small-engine repair. Hulk and Bruce have been separated before, a couple of times in fact, and once where Rick Jones became the Hulk so it's not like there isn't precedence of things like that happening.

In actual news, the Confederate flag is back, this time in a county in Tennessee. While not interesting on the surface, it turns out that according to several Tennesee historians that are totally on the evil liberal payroll say that the county in question was actually Pro-Union during the Civil War so the whole "because heritage!" line doesn't particularly resonate. Also in a great show of groups eating themselves, the Westboro Church is protesting against Kim Davis over her being a hypocrite and an adulterer, basically calling her a false prophet.

No, I mean some speech new cap makes to the UN or some ****. I've seen a single frame and otherwise didn't know much else.

Marvel Unlimited sounds like it would be the way to go, but I also want to make sure the comics they're putting out now are worth it. Do you know if they track what people actually read so they don't get the idea I'm using the service for the new Thor? Also, how good is the back catalog? There's some older stuff I'd love to read(Skrull stuff, for instance).

Yeah, that's who I meant on Hulk. I know it's coming, but I really haven't kept up on dates or anything.

I guess this page where he's advertising his commitment to help anyone that contacts him? I guess it's a bit hokey, but Steve Rogers did the same thing in the 80s, except he did the hot-line first and then quit/was fired from being a direct government employee. Actually, Steve used government money to set up his hot-line, and Sam is doing it out of pocket/donations.
Poldaran wrote:

They advertise "over 17,000 Marvel comics" so I imagine pretty good, but I can't really vouch how comprehensive it is per title. I imagine there are some holes in the chronology, the bigger storylines are probably there but some of the smaller ones aren't.
