I distinctly remember as a small child thinking "Playdough = Potato". And taking a bite of white colored playdough. It tasted like salt. Slimy salt. Vaguely booger-ish in texture and flavor. Not mashed potatoes.

It's Christmas advertising season. I noticed the playdough and other slime funsets are all food related. There was one that was a tub about the size of a coolwhip container. Apparently you add water and the goop inside puffs up to look like some sort of snow-cone material, and you fish out little plastic toys.

And all of it is designed to smell like sweet food stuffs from what I can tell.

If you're not supposed to eat Playdoh then why are all the playsets food related?

I guess this counts as "food related"

I mean, poop is a stage of the eating process. Which leads to why are there so many toys dealing with poop? There's that dog that poops when you press the leash, and the Hasbro game where you're blindfolded and have to walk through basically a minefield.

Also poop is still censored.

Wait, didn't we kill Christmas? I remember there was a war, and we were so insidiously powerful we were bound to win.

Maybe we're trying to catch up to Europe for that three hundred years we spent hating Christmas?

We have a new manager of our purchasing department at work. And he decided to tell everyone that we are not allowed to accept gifts (hats, shirts, etc.) and things like lunches from sales reps anymore.

Which is kind of BS in my opinion. I have good relationships with sales reps built up over the last 13 years. And when I place an order for 75,000$ worth of components and they want to stop by and talk to me over lunch about what I want them to keep stocked on their shelves for quick orders or what issues I have with some of their products... I don't see that as a conflict of interest or bribery or what ever this manager wants to say it is.

Keep a record of old sales, and when they start going down you can just bring it up and point out that the new policy is what is causing it.

Well, I spend money. I don't generate sales. So if my purchases drop then they just see less being spent on my monthly and yearly budgets and they love it. The value of the money I spend is hidden deep within the corporate structure and not visible to the purchasing department that just see a budget and a bunch of expenses.

This guy just seems to hate having a friendly relationship with suppliers. Says they lead to higher costs and people not being honest.

Meanwhile I just got back from another lunch from a sales rep as I placed another 50,000$ order over the last couple weeks. (Never fails with this guy. I place a big order, the next week he calls me up and asks if I want to go to lunch). Cause in the end the new purchasing manager has no real authority over me, and other than fostering resentment between departments, his policy change does nothing.

Most companies set a policy for this sort of thing at the top level, not just the opinion of a manager for one particular group. And most sane policies allow for small things like lunches and swag-bag stuff. As long as the lunches aren't "fly you on a private jet to a resort for a weekend of partying with hookers and blow", and the swag-bag doesn't contain thousand dollar watches or something. Again though, that requires a bit of reasonable thought instead of what looks like knee-jerk reaction in this case.

We aren't supposed to keep "swag bag" type gifts from sales reps. Technically we are supposed to pool them to be raffled off at company picnic and holiday parties. But they don't enforce that with small things. I've got a couple hats (I don't wear hats..) A t-shirt or two, a small, fully articulating, model robot.

that one was a rule made long ago when people in purchasing would end up making all the purchases from large catalog companies like MSC or Grainger constantly, and then stock pile dozens of Shirts and Hats and other promotional items like pre-paid gift cards for themselves without telling people.

So a few years ago a woman in the area got a new cell phone with a number nearly identical to mine (two numbers swapped). Over the last few years I have received phone calls from schools looking for her children, from her children looking for their mother, from businesses looking for her, doctors trying to confirm appointments, etc. I know quite a bit about this woman's life and I never met her.

This weekend it escalated. I got a text from a man who apparently went to dinner with her. Luckily it did not contain anything graphic and the guy wasn't sending various pictures... but he contacted me twice before he accepted the fact that he had the wrong number. And I realize now this issue is escalating to potentially horrifying levels.

It's not really escalating if you're not helping. You should start sending Sex Robot Dick Pics to wrong numbers.

The only thing worse than voting is working in a polling station and having kids wander into your office asking if they can watch cartoons with you.

Anything interesting on your ballot proposals?

Here in MI...

1 - Legalized recreational marijuana
2 - A panel of 13 randomly selected registered voters to make voting districts
3 - Automatic and Same Day voter registration

I was a bit torn on 2...

Other peoples' kids are all world problems. Smiley: mad

Nothing particularly interesting. Cut maximum campaign contributions for candidates running for city office, create a civic engagement commission so we can have more things to vote on, and to apply term limits to community board members.

We passed a measure requiring more humane treatment for food animals; rejected borrowing money to update water storage and treatment (because who needs water, right?); passed a bill increasing housing for veterans and low-income families, which is a band-aid but maybe a good start; and another prop to fund housing and treatment for the mentally ill. Unfortunately that money is getting diverted from existing treatment programs.

We funded structural improvements for children's hospitals around the state, but told seniors and disabled people who want to sell their houses at a reduced tax rate to pound sand.

Mixed bag. Oh, and we have a new governor, who used to be married to DJT Jr's current squeeze. Funny old thing, life.
