...and a three day weekend to boot. Smiley: grin

In celebration of MLK, I'm going to the Verizon store today to get my first very own cell phone.

I've been trying to order one online for the better part of this week, but 'Visa Verified' and Verizon on-line 'live' chat beat me down. I'm sufficiently quelled now to join the masses.

Anyone going diving this weekend?

That made me cry a little. You're going to pay too much. Oh well, Maine sucks, there really aren't many options.

I might wind up going Verizon next time we switch since it's the company carrier so I'd get some extra discount. We currently have T-Mobile which works fine provided you never plan on leaving the city limits with your phone.

I use T-Mobile. Obviously our relative experiences can't be compared because: geography, but my service is generally excellent with the occasional bizarre "dead spot". My house, for instance: perfect 4g. Neighbors house 100 yards away, no service. Verizon's service here is unarguably better. What it isn't is 3 times the price better (that's not hyperbole).

Verizon and US Cellular are the only two providers with viability in Maine and their pricing is about the same (actually Verizon is 5 bucks cheaper for pre-paid).

Seems most of the cut-rate carriers rely heavily on Sprint towers which are basically non-existent up here.

My daughter just dumped T-Mobile for Verizon because of poor coverage (she's in Upstate NY).

It's the major carrier in these parts. I've had a work cell for at least a decade - it's always been US Cellular.

Verizon seems to actually have better coverage, but they're the 'new' guys.

CRESTWOOD!? Why, I oughtta... (Edit, That's actually Crest Hill but I still oughtta. You need to move your dot into the Plainfield metro area)

There's also this

I was a little tongue-in-cheek but, interestingly, all the ads around here are for AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon. You only see US Cellular signs on the ghetto phone shops. I won't state this authoritatively -- I could just not pay much attention to phone advertising.

It's next to the airport. The White Sox play at....US Cellular Field. My first thought was "that name is all over Chicago" I'm going to infer that Joph doesn't follow sports.

No, that sounds right. Most of Maine is Gary Indiana with lobsters and white people.

You can't be a White Sox fan. You're a 40 something middle class white fellow. You are contractually required to be a Cubs fan.

Considering how well the Nationals did this year, I'm jealous of anyone that doesn't follow baseball.

No, seriously, how the **** did that happen?

Out of curiosity, what do y'all consider "upstate New York"? I mean, I live in an almost rural area between towns and use Sprint, which features several extensive dead zones nearby.

And then drinking! Wheeeeee!

I've never been ice skating, ever, which feels weird, being from Maine. Also: hate skiing with the burning passion of a thousand dying suns...rates higher on the "things I will never try to do again" than even driving a stick.

I live in Michigan, went to college at Michigan Tech way up in the UP, and have never once put on a pair of ice skates, skis, snow shoes, a snow board, etc. And I've never cut a hole in the ice to drop a line or spear through.

I used to go smelting (for smelts...the fish...not the molten metal type) lots when I was a kid...but that's really "cheating ice fishing" in a cabin on the ice with a wood stove and take-out chinese ;) I've been snow shoeing, I've been cross country skiing. I just hate being cold, and wet, and falling down (which I do...A LOT). That's why I left that life behind and moved down here, to the balmy south of Massachusetts.

I predict it will be anticlimactic and you will think of better ways it could have been executed and leave mildly disappointed, but congestive dissonance will convince you that you had a good time.
