Any interesting local referendums or the like this cycle?

Illinois has two proposed constitutional amendments. One is a spiel about not denying anyone the right to register to vote or cast a ballot based on gender, race, sexual orientation, language, income, ethnicity, etc. While I'm not opposed to it, I'm not strongly for it either since existing law already grants these protections. The other one is a lengthy bit about "crime victims rights" that boils down to a right not to be harassed or abused during the criminal justice proceeding, gives the victim greater opportunities to make statements during trials, plea bargains, parole hearings and the like and the right for greater levels of information regarding the criminal's release or other status changes. It's a lot of text and frankly I haven't slogged through it yet to have an opinion on it. Although it sounds on the surface more like stock legislature than something that needs to be codified into the state constitution.

Failing to make the ballot was a term limit amendment. I'm opposed to term limits so I would have voted against it anyway.

Driving around town, I'm amused by two candidates' signs. One is some guy running for state rep with the name Batinick. His entire election campaign strategy seems to be saying "Elect the Bat". Last cycle he was running with an even more blatant Batman rip-off but his signs this cycle lack the black/yellow scheme and logo. I'm guessing a cease-and-desist from DC Comics.

Another candidate running for a county board seat has signs reading "Reed BIBLE District 5". Wonder what his angle is there...

Florida seems pretty contentious. Gubernatorially, we have the incumbent, Rick Scott, against the previous governor, Charlie Crist, who switched from a Republican ticket to the Democrats. Latest polls have them exactly tied up. We also have three amendments; a conservation effort (I think this will pass); legalized medical marijuana (I hope this will pass), and expanding the governor's power to allow him to fill vacancies by appointment (I don't want this to pass, and don't think it will).

I think ours in Michigan are just hunting related. Recently they established a wolf hunting season in the UP. Now they are fighting that. First proposal is undoing the hunting season (but, because of the way things work and the way the wording is, you have to vote "No" if you want to overturn the previous law.)

And a second one to try and let the NRC designate hunting seasons without having to go to the legislature. I think it's in direct opposition to the First proposal, the wording appears to directly mention allowing the NRC to set wolf hunting seasons.

Looks like we just have one, a bond to pay for infrastructure repair. Boring!

The failed initiatives are so much more fun.

We have 4. Ballot questions here are basically the equivalent of submitting a bill to the legislature, there's still a vote in both houses and they need to be signed by the Governor (or veto-overidden or whatever). I assume it's because we aren't a state full of morons who think "direct democracy" makes much sense. They generally pass the legislature in similar form if they are approved by voters.

Question 1 Gas taxes Repeals 2013 law that automatically increases gas taxes according to inflation
Question 2 Environment Expands the state’s beverage container recycling law to include all non-alcoholic containers
Question 3 Gambling Repeals a 2011 law allowing resort casinos
Question 4 Labor Entitles certain employees to earn and utilize paid sick days

I'll vote no, yes, no, and yes.

Polling indicates most other people will as well.

Georgia has three.

1. Prohibits the state from increasing the maximum state income tax rate above that in effect on January 1, 2015
2. Empowers the legislature to impose additional reckless driving penalties and allocate revenue from such penalties to the Brain and Spinal Injury Trust Fund
3. Extends an ad valorem tax exemption to privately owned and operated student dormitories and parking decks within the University of Georgia system

I'm voting yes on #2, and no on 1 and 3. The state should stay flexible in regards to taxes, and I don't want any friggin privately owned parking decks on ANY of the USG campuses. (Private dorms? You mean apartments?) The school-owned stuff is bad enough. Nobody actually has either of them yet as far as I know - they're just trying to create a tax incentive for outside investors to come along and build them, since dorms and parking decks are very expensive.

Apparently we have quite a few, I wasn't even paying attention. The only thing I've seen is stuff about the governor's race, which I believe has about a 10 point spread at the moment. My knee-jerk reaction at the moment:

Measure 86: Amends Oregon Constitution to create fund for Oregonians pursuing post-secondary education; authorizes debt to finance
-I don't know yet. I might have to find look-up how effective these things have been in other states first.

Measure 87: Allows judges to be hired by the National Guard and public universities; allows school employees to serve in the legislature
-I'm assuming this was designed to keep teachers from indoctrinating their students or something. I don't really care either way honestly, but may vote yes in the hopes in the hope it'll make future elections more interesting.

Measure 88: Upholds four-year driver licenses for those who cannot prove legal presence in the United States
-I wish we all had a 4 year system sometimes. Probably uphold because I'm not aware of a pressing reason to change. Unless someone really guilts me with some kind of equality thing, then I'll flip-flop.

Measure 89: Guarantees equal rights regardless of sex
-Yes. Harmless and fairly pointless yes vote.

Measure 90: Creates an open, top-two primary election system
-Yeah sure. Why not spice things up a little and move the cheese on people? I'm under no delusion this will make things any different.

Measure 91: Legalizes recreational marijuana; tasks Oregon Liquor Control Commission with regulation of its sale
-Yes. I only voted no last time because I didn't want the state dealing with the legal hassles. Since the federal government doesn't seem willing to challenge this kind of thing my objection is gone.

Measure 92: Mandates labeling of certain foodstuffs that contain genetically modified organisms
-No. I really don't see the point of the label.

We have a bunch of bond issues and an citizens initiative to ban the hunting of bears with dogs, traps and baiting. The latter comes up for a vote every few years. I'll vote 'no' to saving the bears.

We have congressional seat opening up as the dude is running for gov. The republican running has lots of name recognition from running in other big ticket elections, xp as former state treasurer and money, but he could still blow it running against a relatively unknown state legislator.

A senate race between the incumbent Susan Collins and a relative new-comer Shenna Bellows should be easy for Susan to win. Though Shenna is campaigning hard. Susan Collins doesn't have the apolitical love that Olympia Snow enjoyed.

Governor race is a 3-way. My guy, Mike Michaud, is still barely keeping the lead in the polls. Pray for Maine.

The bear population is closely counted and tightly controlled in the state. Hunting is how they keep the numbers in check.

While it's a nice thought to give bears a fighting chance, people are really bad at hunting them without using humanly tricks.

That's ok, it's not like we couldn't use our own limited population control measures or anything.

Well this initiative is only attempting to outlaw baiting, trapping and dogs from bear hunts. I see though that Alaska has banned the use of drone-assisted hunting. Bet that wasn't Sarah's idea.

Should be? Shenna's lovely as a person. She's going to lose by 30.

Shenna Bellows is the picture of 'sweet'.

Really, it's hard to imagine her making an impact in the US Senate. Still I'll be voting for her.

She cried when Nexa turned down a job with ACLU Maine. Didn't offer her any more money, though, so she might just be extremely adept sociopath.

Are you sure the tears weren't because Nexa was running off with some unassuming video game message board poster?

Probably. Shortly afterward I engineered LePage's victory. That that, ACLU Maine.

So our governors' soon to be next wife doesn't seem to mind marrying people for whatever bad reasons. I still wonder if it's enough for the Republican to actually close the rather large gap between them but it certainly won't hurt. I mean we already knew about a bunch of various not good stuff about Kitzhaber and we've still elected him 3 times, and this has nothing to do with him personally it seems.

Either way I might have reason to follow the race now. Smiley: popcorn
