Story time...

So my mom called me today. Me and her have had a joint bank account for years; left over from my childhood. I haven't accessed it for years, but she had been going into the account on occasion and depositing or moving around a few bucks just to keep it active. She asked me if I wanted to update my contact information as it still had an old address and what not. I told her not to worry about it, just take any money she had put in there and close the account. I mean I hadn't touched it in forever, and didn't see any reason to have it opened any longer. She was quiet for a second and then replied "but you have like $5,000 in there."

Wait... what?

My first thought was that it was left over from old previous saving accounts or little bits that had been added over time. So I said, well for goodness sake at least move it to the savings account so it's earning a little interest. She did that and we got to talking, turns out she never put any money in the account either. She'd seen the money in there for years and never mentioned anything as she though we might have put it there while we were moving or something. I told her I never put that much money in there.

So she started looking through the account history and old statements and such. Turns out back in 2009 some place called Sam's home repair deposited $5,000 into the account, and no one ever noticed. Both of us were clueless and apparently ol' Sam never came calling for the cash I guess.

Anyway, mom is on the way down to the bank to ask them about it. So this is new to me, what happens now?

Thoughts?
Go on take the money and run.:4 (25.0%)
"Sam" is up to no good.:0 (0.0%)
Sam's an idiot.:8 (50.0%)
Can I have your stuff?:4 (25.0%)
Total:16

Hookers and blow. It's the only reasonable thing to do.

Or just put it in a college fund for your kids, by the time they go to college it'll pay for the first 4 or 5 days. The money's been in there for 5 years and you've never heard anything about it so I wouldn't worry about it.

Yeah, no too worried. Still would prefer to give it back if it's in anyway possible. You know, since it really wasn't my money and all. Still wondering how the heck something like this could happen.

Maybe I should you're probably closer to them anyway. Google finds like 4 or 5 different hits in Western Washington, so that's a bit of a problem. Maybe I should call them all up and ask them if they ever lost $5,000 and if they want it back.

People are always honest right? Smiley: rolleyes

Edit: Part of me just wants to do that for the fun really. I bet I'd get some amusing responses. Smiley: lol

Well for better or for worse the bank says as far as they're concerned it's our money to do what we like with. There wasn't a mistake or anything fishy on their end. Mom's figuring to make some phone calls on Monday.

You should use it to bribe the people in charge of this site to keep that stupid link bar as far away as possible. It's a little better now that it doesn't follow you down the screen, but they'll change it back eventually. Either that, or you could start buying shirts for everyone. I hear that always works out well.

Sam's Home Repair probably went out of business after a banking error caused Sam to default on his business loan. Things spiraled out of control from there. His inability to support his dear young wife with a babe in her arms and another in her tummy, was more than he could face up to.

So it turns out the correct answer is c) Sam's an idiot.

Smiley: popcorn

Sam's son was going to college and needed money to pay for it, so Sam sent him $5,000 to help pay for classes. Well a little over a month later bills are coming due and Sam's son asks his father when he's going to send the money. Sam explains he already sent the money then proceeds to accuse his son of wasting it all on parties, booze, women and the like. After what was apparently a heated discussion Sam tells his son if he wants more money he needs to take out a loan; which is what the son does.

Fast forward 5 years later and there's a phone call from someone claiming that the missing money landed in a unused bank account and has been languishing for years. Well to make a long story short Sam promptly got off the phone with us and on the phone with his son to apologize. The $5,000 is on it's way to Sam's son to pay off the loan he took out. Or you know, actually spend on parties, booze and women, since he didn't get to enjoy that part of his college experience it seems.

Was there some way of proving it was him and not some other Sam? Did he at least know the amount without you telling him?

Yeah he knew the amount and what we were talking about without needing to be told. As a bonus he lived in the same small town I grew up in (this was a local credit union), not too far from where we used to live and all that.

Split it and go. You have been holding on to it for 5 years. Seems long enough for it to be legally yours now.

Hah. The same scenario went through my mind recently. I was cashing in the first of my nieces/nephews college fund checks and was super careful to get the damn bank routing numbers correct (eventually). Also learned a few lessons on how to do this properly for next time. Just have them deposit the cash into your own account and then write a check for the recipient. Do not do what I did and have them cut you a physical check with the idea that it would be really cool for the recipient to have the physical check from the 529 to cash into their own bank. Apparently, even if the check is from a 529, and the recipient's name is on the FBO line, and you've signed and endorsed it specifically to that same person, the bank at the other end will only accept it if you are physically there with the recipient. Which is problematic when they're in another state, check in hand during the first week of school at some bank that doesn't exist in my state.

I ended out having to wire transfer the same amount to my niece's account, then have my sister carry the check back to me, then cash it back to my own account. Which itself ended out being a problem because for them, the existence of an FBO line meant that the recipient needed to be present for me to cash my own damn check. Fortunately, my bank isn't some little podunk thing that exists only in like two states in the middle of the US somewhere (and I have a largish amount of money in accounts with them), so they waived that requirement.

Next time, when the 529 guy asks me whether I want to send it to the school to pay the tuition (don't do this either btw, because some schools will reduce financial aid by the same amount), send me a physical check, or deposit it into my account, I'll choose the last one in the list. Lesson learned (and shared! Smiley: schooled).

But yeah, I double and triple checked the number for the wire transfer. Best to avoid that, especially if transferring into a personal account (businesses are easier to verify).
