In the summer of 2004, IKEA decided to change the way they produced their product images. They made the first tentative moves toward CG rendered, rather than photographic, images. “We made 8 or 10 quite bad product visualisations by today’s standards,” says Martin, “but it sparked something and we continued to work at it. In the fall of 2006 we first showed a product in the catalogue. The first CG piece of furniture was a chair called “Bertil”.
...
Today, around 75% of all IKEA’s product images are CG, and they have a ‘bank’ of about 25,000 model
...
The first entire room image to be created in CG for one of IKEA’s catalogues was in 2010. “There were a LOT of people involved in that image,” says Martin. “As you can imagine, the first time you do something, everyone wants to have a look! But then the catalogue after that had four or five images and it really took off.”
...
Now, about 35% of all of IKEA Communication’s non-product images are also fully CG (i.e not photographic composites).

Pretty fascinating stuff, I've been looking through the IKEA catalog I still had laying around and even knowing all this I can't say for certain with any image that it's CGI. I knew this was already done to some extend with cars because cars are so problematic to photograph (round, reflective surfaces everywhere!) but that IKEA uses this much CGI surprised me.

If you think Ikea's photos are the only things that are fake you haven't tried their scrambled eggs.

I quite like their scrambled eggs. Pretty much the only food guaranteed not to be 80% horse.

Getting horse instead of eggs would probably be value added. What is horse selling for these days?

Depends on which parts, the edible parts are still cheaper than cows given the use of them in various "beef" products over the last year but their butts are valuable because they make for the best leather for high end shoes.

Now I'm curious about horse eggs. I'm also a little disturbed that it isn't even the top ten worst foods I've considered/tried.

Good point. If horse was worth anything, we'd be eating fake horse with 60% illegal beef content.

Some living ones are worth a fortune though, enough sheiks are interested in horse sports that the best horses are worth millions of dollars.

Well, obviously I meant horse meat. They're not converting Kentucky Derby winners into Swedish meatballs.

Ironically: "Even famous horses may end up in the slaughterhouse; the 1986 Kentucky Derby winner and 1987 Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year winner, Ferdinand, is believed to have been slaughtered in Japan, probably for pet food."

Dunno though. I suspect that when horse meet ends out in beef products, it's more likely to be an accident or one off event rather than some insidious cost saving measure. I can't imagine that horse meet is actually cheaper than beef in bulk or as a general practice. Although, I suppose when one has old horses to get rid off, selling them to some unscrupulous slaughterhouse is less expensive than actually paying to dispose of them, and the slaughterhouse can just toss them into the grinders with the chuck. I doubt anyone's actually making a whole lot of money on it though.

Not really that high on the list of things I care about though.

And once again, I'll express my surprise that people shop at IKEA, much less actually eat food there. That always just struck me as strange.

Wait, they really sell food? I thought that was just a running gag in the topic. I thought IKEA just sold assemble yourself furniture.

IKEA has cheap and simple furniture that will fit in most households. I'm not sure how anyone could possibly be surprised that people shop there.

I assume he wasn't in Europe :).

I think the only reason I heard about it was because a couple people here in Zam mentioned it. I don't recall hearing anything about it in local news.

Heard about it, then went "meh" it's horse meat, who cares? Then I remembered people are weird, and it all made sense.

Also, whale is delicious.

Also, also, IKEA is for cheap stuff your kids are just going to destroy anyway.

I only vaguely recall it, and my impression was that the bigger issue was the pork present in beef products and that the lack of proper tracking/labeling of the meat introduced the potential for harmful chemicals to be present in food meant for humans. That and the bewildering routes that meat apparently travels in Europe could make it extremely difficult to track down any sort of contamination issue. It never occurred to me that there might be a monetary reason for doing this deliberately on any kind of large scale, but upon reading a bit about the subject, either beef is significantly more expensive or horse significantly less (relative to the US) such that this even becomes a potential issue in Europe.

This *and* it's ugly as sin. Well, not "ugly" maybe, but just incredibly generic and boring in a way that only IKEA can manage. Everything is a box. Everything is about function. Dunno. I feel like I'm being assimilated by a Swedish Borg collective just looking at their catalog. It's kinda creepy.

We both live in SoCal, let's meet up so I can punch you in the throat for raping my brain every time you use that phrase.

Also, I would eat horse, they are not cute enough in my estimation. **** them and pandas. MMMM, panda burger!

What about snakes? I hear Florida has a problem with pythons swarming around, maybe they're good for more than making shoes out of.
