Perfect, that'll save time. I'll go dig up some of the plot lines left over from when they cancelled All My Children and we should be ready to put it on Kickstarter.

Depression Quest is something that I could have programmed in BASIC on an Apple ][e back in junior high. In fact, one of our assignments WAS to make a "Choose Your Own Adventure" (the adventurous excitement of GOSUB routines) and mine was probably better.

Gabji's gained sentience, but for the good of mankind he shut it down and pretended he didn't understand the assignment.

Is that what happened? I thought it was just stuck in an infinite loop.

I watched that, too.

I was playing WoW while I watched it, though, so I don't remember the name of the game either.

Yeah.. native speakers are wrong because they use the language colloquially. I might think kids saying like every three words is annoying, but it does not make it any less a part of the actual language.

Then again, maybe I can learn something. What part of the language were feminists trying to change? Manholes? Mankind? Superman? Iman? Throw like a girl?

Wow, this guy made a 13 min video about IGF drama. Someone's butthurt.
Without the context of everything else going on, it's entirely possible that this video wouldn't exist. It's just one more piece of evidence that's a part of the bigger picture of corruption among indie devs, within the games press and within these PR groups that seem to have their hands in all the pots.

Honestly, I'm surprised it's only a thirteen minute video. As it is, I've watched over ten hours of vids on this whole kerfluffle, usually about 20-25 minutes each. Well, watched is the wrong word. Listened to while working is more apt.

No one tried to change 'mankind' - or 'human' being for that matter. 'They' changed incorrect language. What's it to you if a female Firefighter doesn't want to be called a fireman?

Why would you change Superman? ...(maybe you know something about "S" that most of us don't)

I had to change up a bunch of policies to make them gender-neutral. It was no big deal, and it's much more correct. Really, you learn to phrase stuff to not have to use pro-nouns when writing official documents.

You're just being ornery.

Me? Hardly.

And I may not want to be a called a ****, but I can't just change the language to match my individual needs.

Ehhh....there are a lot of gender sensitive style guides that suggest substituting "humankind." Was definitely a thing at some point.

If Tumblr is to be believed, even humankind isn't sensitive enough a term for a lot of the genderfluid otherkins.

Having "played" Depression Quest, I'm surprised that any gaming media outlet had anything to say about it. It's amateur, forgettable junk. People shit out better stuff daily by playing through RPG Maker tutorials. I hate to say it's mainly because she's a female 'developer' (I use the term loosely here) but I can't think of another reason why anyone would waste keystrokes talking about it.

I didn't read all the stuff, but what I read about Depression Quest sounded like a psa for clinical depression.

So, I'm thinking the game is supported and not to be unsupported or criticized as that would be viewed as dissing the depressed.

Pretty much. What it is not, though, is a good game in either an entertaining sense or even a technical sense. Granted, the world is full of crappy amateur games but most of them don't get mentions in gaming media much less enough attention to be the foundation for a "scandal".

Or the educational sense. Yet somehow it's an award-winning production.

I'm mostly on about the part with the nigh simultaneous articles **** on gamers for daring to question the corruption of the people who ended up writing the articles, more or less at this point.

Also, I don't think depression quest got famous because she's a female. I think it's because she said Wizardchan was picking on her and people she knew in the industry rushed to her aid. There are also the connections to that PR firm that seems to have connections to everything.

That's deeper down the ole gaming industry rabbit hole than I know or am willing to know about.

One of those long list of links talked about how "fun" shouldn't be a critique criteria when discussing a game. It might have been the third one, I stopped reading at that point.

It’s a meaningless ideal at best and a poisonous priority at worst. Fun is a neurological trick. Plenty of categorically unhealthy things are “fun”. Let’s try for something more. Many of the alternatives will have similarly fuzzy definitions, but let’s aspire to qualities like “edifying”, “healing”, “pro-social”, or even “enlightening”. I encourage you to decide upon your own alternatives to “fun” in games (while avoiding terms like “cool” and “awesome” and any other word that simply caters to existing, unexamined biases).

Fuck this guy. Seriously. Fuck him right in his dumb brain hole.
