I figured you probably didn't, but on the off-chance someone did, I've learned that I often have to clarify things to make sure some people don't read things into what I've said or linked that aren't necessarily true for me.

I do not like modern day feministas, but I didn't like them when they were fighting to change the language from postman to postwoman.

The 'language' was never postman - except colloquially. I call my mail lady, 'mail lady'. I'd no sooner call her my postman than I'd call your mail man my mail lady. The official title is Letter Carrier.

As for the gaming issue. Sure there are games that are very misogynistic. But it's entertainment/art - they mimic, expand and fanatasize real life. A game reviewer can and should call out a game that is overtly violent or hating on a real life group of people. But I don't see a campaign to end gaming, nor do I see the industry moving more towards bigoted or hateful games. Of course, I gravitate towards the games I like - boob sliders and all (i tend to slide it all the way to the small end), but not violent or x-rated.

Feminism, to me, doesn't have much to do with saving princesses.

The OP sounds like it was just one crazed stalker. Real or not, meh, who cares. The whole deal, even before the 'death threats, has been politicized. It's one woman writing some stuff that pretty much disses the entire gaming industry. She's got some salient points, but over-all her work doesn't seem to be looking to solve a problem as much as it's about notoriety for herself. I'd be surprised if I learned she never had a single hater making threats.

Pretty much. My primary criticism would be that she keeps giving the weak disclaimer that it's not that these things are never appropriate but her videos don't back that up. If you're going to complain about a woman needing rescuing in Mario Bros or Hitman, then say "But it's not always bad..." then tell us when it's not "bad" and how that's different from Mario Bros and Hitman's treatment. If you're going to provide the weak cover of pretending it's sometimes understandable then you need to show the contrast between those times and the games where it's apparently terrible because she's using them as examples of how bad it is.

She never does this. Even her supposed final "Women done right" video isn't going to say "These are examples of games where domestic violence as a plot point is acceptable" but rather just show (in her eyes) acceptable female characters. She wants to keep saying "They're not all bad" but she obviously thinks that they are. She's insincere about her beliefs but wants to mold the game industry to accommodate them.

RoK is to the MRM as Depression Quest is to Gaming: Well, from kind of a weird point of view, maybe...but every other game is laughing at it.

Hey, I just like to provide chuckles, at the very most. Maybe a slight guffaw. Nothing more and nothing...well, sometimes less, but...

ETA: Although the 12 second thing is kind of weird.

The fact that something like Depression Quest is this divisive and not universally ridiculed goes to show how the industry is imploding in on itself.

It seems to just be gaming journalism (if you can call it that) that is imploding.

King Digital Entertainment is doing splendidly.

I watched part of a weird movie this week. It was a documentary about a gaming couple in Korea that neglected their baby til it died. The game they were playing looked pretty good, but I can't remember what it was called.

Depression Quest is something that I could have programmed in BASIC on an Apple ][e back in junior high. In fact, one of our assignments WAS to make a "Choose Your Own Adventure" (the adventurous excitement of GOSUB routines) and mine was probably better.

My basic programming class had the same assignment. I got in trouble because I programmed it to include some not so flattering things about my friend in the class that were synced to images from Duece Bigalow if you selected certain choices. Luckily the computer crashed before it got to the real bad stuff.

Must have been the basic curriculum for teaching that.

THB I think we're moving the wrong direction, what we really should have is some games with questionable male stereotypes that appeal to female gamers. You know, for balance and such.

Also add things like Origin giving me wing commander for free over the weekend, and being 300 hours in a game written by a man and his wife (which I bought for like $4) and I'm starting to see the crux of the problem. Suspect it's a little bigger than "smartphones are killing us." Smiley: rolleyes

We already had the Sims 3 Supernatural expansion, just add in some bad acting and you're 90% of the way there.
