Also, oh hey... Deadspin. Gawker media has managed to bring its Click-Bait Issue of the Month to yet another of its properties. How kind of Gawker to publish yet ANOTHER column defining for us all exactly what Gamergate is and driving its own perfectly innocent narrative Smiley: rolleyes

Why the hermumph is every article on this a mini-novel? I liked the "This is when everything fell all the way down the ****ter" synopsis however.

Because you can't work twenty links to Gawker, Kotaku and Jezebel into a three paragraph article.

At this point, listening to Gawker Media about Gamergate is like listening Fox News about Democrats. They know where their paychecks are coming from and they know the best way to stay in the money is a 24/7 stream of things to get outraged about.

No, they are wrong for other reasons. They just are a big enough voice that they can drown out anyone else by calling them all misogynists. Heck, first line of the second paragraph pretty much says that.

1st line of 2nd paragraph wrote:
By design, Gamergate is nearly impossible to define.

It does???

I thought it was a pretty in depth article that points out not only the issues with gamergate itself & breaks down the history of it, it even points out the issues journalists are having covering it by giving equal voice to both "sides" but leaving out the crazy, conspiracy theory filled, misogynistic side.

Yes, it does.

Actual first line of Second quoted paragraph wrote:

The quoted paragraphs are pretty much exactly what Pold and Joph had issues with.

Quote:
Really, though, Gamergate is exactly what it appears to be: a relatively small and very loud group of video game enthusiasts who claim that their goal is to audit ethics in the gaming-industrial complex and who are instead defined by the campaigns of criminal harassment that some of them have carried out against several women. (Whether the broader Gamergate movement is a willing or inadvertent semi-respectable front here is an interesting but ultimately irrelevant question.)

Ignoring the issues, calling them irrelevant, and focusing instead on categorizing everyone who disagrees with them as pro-murder/rape/threats/misogyny.

Edit:
Damn multiple nested quotes...

The Article breaks down all the issues on every side of Gamergate.

It says pretty much exactly what I've been saying in this entire thread - that because of the very loud actions of a few, the movement is more defined by the misogyny that started the movement than the ethics in video game journalism issues that it has since tried to pivot to. Because of that, I don't really feel they're wrong in saying while those issues are interesting, they're ultimately irrelevant due to the crazy taking center stage.

And at no point in the article do they paint anyone that disagrees with them in the pro-murder/rape/threats/misogyny camp.

Did we read the same thing, are you projecting, or am I missing something else?

To me, that says this:

Gamergate = Misogyny
Anything else is just a front to hide the misogyny, and is irrelevant, cause all that is important is the smaller group of misogynists.

I liked it when he said Intel was "bullied" into dropping its ads. I wonder if Gawker Media ever said that 1-800-FLOWERS was "bullied" into dropping its ads from Rush Limbaugh during the Sandra Fluke thing.

Yes, as I said, instead of talking about it, they can just call everyone misogynists and ignore them as irrelevant. And they say it's a good thing.

As I said, I disagree & here we are arguing about semantics as the article predicted.

In this case it's not a debate over "semantics", it's just relaying what the article's author said in his own words:

Gamergate is exactly what it appears to be: a relatively small and very loud group of video game enthusiasts who claim that their goal is to audit ethics in the gaming-industrial complex and who are instead defined by the campaigns of criminal harassment that some of them have carried out against several women. (Whether the broader Gamergate movement is a willing or inadvertent semi-respectable front here is an interesting but ultimately irrelevant question.)

I don't think you understand what "semantics" means. In any event, saying "Semantics!" is a Gbaji-level cop out.

Also, Heh.

Oh, I understand semantics. I just don't infer the same meaning in that quote that the two of you do, hence why I find it amusing that the article predicted we'd be arguing over them. I think what you quoted explains gamergate pretty spot on, so I doubt I've copped out of anything in this thread.

I am getting tired of saying the same thing over & over though & shall be leaving work shortly, so I'll check back in tomorrow.

Toodle-oo!

(the comic was funny)
