If it is any small comfort there's usually a strong stigma attached to the apartment building that's been set aside for the poor people, to the extent they're unlikely to benefit as much from the good neighborhood as the others around them. The middle-upper class can maintain their illusion and the poor people will suffer as they think they're failing despite being given equal opportunity.

Win/win right?

I'm all for the better neighborhoods for the reason Smash pointed out. Watching people spaz over it is quite amusing.

Here in the worker's paradise, they just set aside some units for the poors when they build a new complex. There really isn't a way to tell if someone is paying $3k a month or on a voucher. I mean aside from their manners, obviously. As an odd side effect, wealthy suburbs like ours have a culture where you just sort of assume anyone who rents is poor, because people who aren't poor buy houses. Different dynamic in urban centers, obviously, I assume you tell by asking about where people summer or the like. I think the poors can only get vouchers for Hyannisport or Truro, so it's pretty easy to tell.

That's frequently a condition of development in cities over here, only the 'affordable' units are often accessed through a different door, and have a separate core inside the building so the tenants don't mix.

Which, uh, makes it pretty easy to tell.

Is there a sign reading "chavs ---->" for the low rent entrance? This is a fairly novel building idea over here, what with how well segregation worked with the coloreds, it became a bit of a thing in NYC recently, most of the media coverage wasn't glowing.

It would be difficult to come with a more on-the-nose metaphor for New York City's income inequality problem than the new high-rise apartment building coming to 40 Riverside Boulevard, which will feature separate doors for regular, wealthy humans and whatever you call the scum that rents affordable housing.

But, as the argument goes, if they're still in the slum are you really helping them any? How do you get people out of that cycle of poverty if you're just keeping them in a low-income neighborhood with limited access to good educational opportunities and employment? What does that do to the crime rate? Etc, etc. The need to have housing assistance is just a symptom of the larger problem to be fixed, or something like that.

Sure, but then the middle class folks might get jealous, and as you can see from this thread, the middle class folks need to feel superior to the poor folks because the BIG LIE of the moral hazard of providing an above subsistence lifestyle to the poor is alive and well in America. Sad, really, but a good object lesson of why it's so easy to manipulate US citizens into a perpetual underclass so long as you let them feel better than SOMEONE.

Uh huh. And the rich do not perceive other class members in a similar fashion ( new money/old money for example). I hate to be the one break this news to you, but it universal human condition.. that, we compare ourself to others and value ourseof based on thay comparison.

Sad, really.

Of course. Legislating social welfare based on that probably isn't the best idea, is the point. Odpierdol sie, dupek. Did I get that right? I haven't been to Warsaw in decades.

Close, 'dupku'; you wouldn't survive a day there.

Anyhoo, legislating social welfare based on an unknown pre-ordained patheticness scale is about as useful.

Or is there a more politically-correct word for "poor" these days? Smiley: confused

OK, I lied, you get a rate up. But don't think this'll be a habit or anything.
