What benefits? I work in a field that has been dominated by women for a long time now, and, fantasies aside, there aren't really any benefits to it. Not only is it like trying to get work done in a chicken coop, but they also talk about all kinds of female-related issues that I don't need to know about. And then there's the unintentional sexual harassment issue.

"One good thing about this pregnancy is that my boobs have gotten a loot bigger and firmer! What do you think?"

Yeah... I think I want my lawyer now.

I work better with women than men, always have. As a whole they're much better at actually getting things accomplished, for my opinion. You can bounce ideas back and forth, get problems brought up that are actually important, divvy up work more easily.

Too many guys and they spend all their time shooting down everyone else's ideas, it's virtually impossible to make any headway without going through the obligatory measuring contest. What's the saying? Women will agree with you even if they don't mean it, and men will disagree with you even if they don't mean it? Something like that. There's a point where a male dominated workplace just comes apart in lieu of a clear leader. People will stop trying to figure out the better ideas, and start disagreeing for the sake of disagreeing, then going with the ideas of the person who wins the 'king of the mountain' contest. Spent some time doing consulting for a software firm that was like 95% men. Ugh, never again, that was insane. Young male syndrome on full display, you couldn't ask for opinions from a group without starting a major argument, and nothing ever got resolved in the end.

Granted there's a point where you can move too far the other direction. The wife's workplace is her and 9 other women; my goodness the stories that come out of that place. Smiley: lol

Anyway, let me work in a smaller group that's like 60% or 70% female, and watch stuff get done.

Well yeah, if you use lines like that of course you'll have sexual harassment issues. Smiley: wink

I don't see what's innately harassing about commenting on, or returning a comment on preggo boobs.

I find in my workplace most of the traits that make a good co-worker are as equally abundant and/or lacking regardless of gender.

Part of me drifts back to that article I linked the other day talking about gender differences in communication in different situations. One of the findings was that women communicate more when there's collaborative work to be accomplished in small groups. Given that the research community here is almost entirely smaller groups of 5-10ish people (i.e. individual labs), I'm not surprised at all I'd have the bias simply given the nature of the work and the workplace.

Though I'd say women make better researchers in general for the same reason I've seen it argued that women make better intelligence analysts; they're simply more willing to take reality as it's presented instead of trying to find data to fit their preconceived theories. Men are much more likely to have trouble letting go of a theory that they've become personally invested in when the data starts leading them a different direction.

One of my besties here at work is an Engineer, and an gurl (though also a lesbian).

I work with geologists, engineers and chemists. Generally speaking I'd say the engineers are the problem-solvers, the chemists are the get-er-done guys/gals and the geologists are all just big trouble-makers (they have their heads in the rocks).

More and more these days I'm working with some of our biologists. I've not yet been able to stereotype them. Stay tuned.....
