Get Rid of Patents - This has been getting kicked around by economists for a couple years now. Patents ****** economic growth. Elon Musk recently released all of Tesla's patents in an effort to spur other car makers into making electric cars.

Open Source Earth??

Splitting California into 6 States - This idea is being floated by Silicon Valley CEO Tim Draper. He recently began submitting signatures to put the question on the ballot in 2016.
Draper wrote:
The strongest argument for Six Californias is that we are not well-represented. The people down south are very concerned with things like immigration law and the people way up north are frustrated by taxation without representation. And the people in coastal California are frustrated because of water rights. And the people in Silicon Valley are frustrated because the government doesn't keep up with technology. And in Los Angeles, their issues revolve around copyright law. Each region has its own interest, and I think California is ungovernable because they can’t balance all those interests. I’m looking at Six Californias as a way of giving California a refresh and allowing those states to both cooperate and compete with each other.

We've not had a new state in a long time. I'm no Californian but I'd think they could get their politics straightened out by just splitting 3 or 4 ways. Also, the proposal doesn't include the creation of 'gbajiland', though maybe Knot's Berry Farm could use a new identity.

Eh, any state of decent size has split interests. It's a common grouse downstate that Chicago and the collar counties dominated state politics but the needs of the city aren't the same as the needs of a guy four hours south in Effingham. The complaint as listed doesn't make a ton of sense to me though. Unless the coastal people are objecting to copyright law or tech development, how are the legislative needs of LA or Silicon Valley affecting them? Not that I particularly care what happens to California either way, although the chance of ten new senators getting dumped into Congress is about zero.

The chance of patent reform is far, far, far, far lower. Elon Musk did essentially nothing. Saying "we won't sue if you our IP in good faith" is identical to saying "we won't sue if you infringe our patents unless we feel like it" There's no useful promissory estoppel from a ******* blog post by a CEO, and *have no fear* there is no chance Tesla will codify this more closely. PR stunt, nothing more. When Tesla starts granting 100 year $0 licenses for their IP to someone, let me know. Until then, we can only talk about this as a marketing strategy.

I can see California splitting into thirds (northern coastal, southern coastal and inland), as the interests of those three regions do vary quite a lot. It isn't likely to happen, but it makes more sense than creating five states the size of Rhode Island.

North GA would gladly split off from South GA. Just cut us along the I-20 corridor, dipping south along I-285 until it emerges again on the other side of Atlanta. We might actually get some **** accomplished then. The new South GA could have Milledgeville as their capitol again. Or Macon.

Actually, Gwinnett County in GA would also like to divorce the rest of GA, but they're too small to be a state (Rhode Island notwithstanding.)

There have been two Maines since splitting off from Mass. No one's ever bothered to file the papers and legalized the split.

Yeah, giving 4 of the 6 neo-states California names is pretty lacking on the creativity.

Jefferson looks like it would a nice place to live.

Behold, a dream did come to me, and the Lord did show all of this to me. A time of tribulation has come. A test is at hand ... the final test. In my dream the Lord did come to me, and He was a shape. It was He Who Walks Behind the Rows. And I did fall on my knees in terror, and hide my eyes, lest the fierceness of His face strike me dead! He told me all that has since happened; He said, "Jophiel has taken his things and fled this happy place, because the worship of Me is no more upon him. So take you his life, and spill his blood, like water upon the earth! But let not the flesh pollute the corn; Cast him instead upon the road! And He Who Walks Behind The Rows did say, "I will send outlanders amongst you: A man and a woman. And these outlanders will be unbelievers and profaners of the holy. And the man will sorely test you, for he has great power, even greater than that of the Blue Man! And just as he was offered up unto Him, so shall be the unbelievers!

Speaking of, I bought a dozen ears out of the first day's batch of ripe sweet corn from one of the local farms yesterday afternoon. Paired with hot dogs and sausages from the butcher. Yum yum.

By the time anyone bothers to patent anything it's old news anyway. Can't be on the forefront of innovation if you're using stuff you just patented, or worse yet, taking ideas from other people's discarded patents. They already have ideas they think are better, so they don't mind letting others use their old technology. If you really want to spur innovation and related economic growth more you need more smart people, not less patents.

Meh, splitting states is a frequent topic. Different regions with different needs were arbitrarily lumped together into states 150ish years ago and the situation has never improved, so why not split them up? Maybe it'll happen one day, who knows. I swear it makes the rounds every 10 years or so up here.

Can you imagine the conservative backlash though, with 12 senators from California? We'd have to split North Dakota 6 ways just to keep things "fair." Smiley: rolleyes

Conservatives are behind the idea, actually. Four of the proposed six states would be significantly more conservative than Northern California.

Much like Puerto Rico become 51, the only real benefit of splitting states will be for my wallet once the new flags are in circulation for a decade or two. "Fifty star flag, certified, flown in Iraq/Afghanistan" on ebay.

IIRC that in the past, this was suggested by companies because of Cali having such a large population and so much buying power. That if the state regulates something like a law to have phones have a kill switch. It forces a company to pretty much adopt it world wide because its cheaper than doing it in just Cali. I swear that's why they keep bringing this idea up, but I could be wrong. The companies didn't like that Cali had so much sway over the market.

Which is weird, since NYC is smaller than California and has far more sway.

That's the thing. I doubt anyone would mind overly much if New York was split at, say, Westchester. The city and its suburbs (with Long Island) would be New York, and the rest we'll call...I dunno, Canadia. Though I would say that the entire state, on its own, would be quite impressive as a country in its own right.

You can hardly split the 5 boroughs into individual states. Or could you?

In terms of population, sure you could. In terms of land mass, they'd be wildly the smallest states. The whole city is about 1/4 the geographic size of Rhode Island. Yet still full of so many douchebags and cronut shops. Kind of amazing, really.
