So we didn't have a gun control thread in a while.

And Chicago's ruling elite can't seem to be able to figure out how to deal with gang violence in the poor neighborhoods. Mayor and police superintendent are saying just about anything to mollify the usual suspects ( ban guns, ban straw sales, mandate smart guns, mandate cameras everywhere near a gun, you name it ). And the results are what you could expect since the issue of a poor population of the south saide is not addressed in any significant manner ( though there was some progress, kinda.. Whole Foods built in a poorest neighborhood is a step in a right direction, just the wrong price range for that population ).

Oh yeah, the meme that seems to have started circulating about this. Is there a site that measures which memes have become popular?

Is that an intentionally fake news source or just a very poor one? Searching Google News and the Chicago Tribune site both return nothing about using state National Guardsmen. Aside from some letters to the editor or editorials saying to do so.

Also, they spelled Emanuel wrong.

Thought so. So it's a satire news site without any of the funny.

That's an image macro, not a meme.

Neither, it is both.

Gugl threw it out and since apart from national guard portion it was not completely wrong, I posted it in. Hey, I won't some basic, easily verifiable facts interfere with the basic message -- Chicago has some issues.

I was more interested about the Whole foods in Englewood. It is not like residents there can afford it, and I do not see slightly better off folks driving in the middle of stray bullet storm.

According to Whole Foods, they plan to carry more house brands in that location and more focus on affordable grains and vegetables. It's also opening in partnership with the Washburne Culinary Institute at a local community college. So it's not completely random. Still a lot of people skeptical but I suppose Whole Foods has enough faith that they can make it work to try it. The area where it's going is supposed to be getting renovated into retail stores as well so it supposedly wouldn't be a Whole Foods stuffed between a payday loan place and a liquor store.

If it works as intended. Suppose it makes sense that a corporation wouldn't make something it wasn't in its interest. I am simply not sure, but sure beats the ban everything approach.

Eh, you and a lot of other people. There was a hullabaloo when the local alderman said they didn't need a place like Whole Foods coming in and Whole Foods said "Well, we don't have to come in..." and then I suppose Rahm Emanuel sent the guy a dead fish or something because it's still going ahead.

I have the luxury of not living in Englewood and thus not not being impacted much either way. As for the overall shootings, it's mainly gang violence (or collateral damage of gang shootings) and mainly on the South Side. Precious few hipsters getting shot in Bucktown while shopping for skinny jeans or vintage Walkmans. Anywhere I'd ordinarily go in the city, I'd just as likely go to today and feel just fine about it. That's not to belittle the plight of those who DO live there and DO have to deal with it, I'm just making the point that it's not as though the entire city is paralyzed with random shootings or something. While economic revitalization and all that is a long term goal, in the short term I imagine it'll come down to more cops and more robust efforts to crack down on the gangs.

Well, the general consensus seems to be that as long as it is limited to the south side, we don't need to care that much. I live in a suburb, and most cops have to worry about on a weekend is a dui and rowdy teenager driving over the speed limit. I am waiting for the day, when SS won't be recognized as the whole reason "urban" adjective came into existence -- then again, the poor have to live somewhere.

At least the city's not bankrupt, so it's got that going for it.

They need to be seeking assylum in a peaceful country.

They should move to Mexico and then attempt a border crossing back into the US where they'll be apprehended by US customs and put up in luxury barracks. As a parting gift before they had back North they'll be given barrels of coin, a debt-free Harvard education and a gold-plated Obama iphone.
