Why is the guy who posted a singles ad seeking men to fuck so worried about a teenaged boy's sex life?

Seriously, you're fucking weird and ****. Go troll some other forum for your pedophile urges.

Anyway, I'm taking the elder child to Friday Night Magic for some high stakes fantasy card game playing

Realizing this is something inherently dependent on the actual location and likely varies wildly, do you think I could bring 9 year old Hannah to FNM? She absolutely can play well enough, but I don't want to bring her to room full of 15 year old boys and bitter neckbeards.

It could be a good introduction into acne.

I'm more concerned it could be a good introduction to awkward flattery and leering. I'm not ready for that ****.

I think 9 is still too young to creepily hit on even for 14 year olds. Beyond that FNM's are under WotC's umbrella and they don't like players being harassed so if that happens you should go to a judge for that and the offender will at least be reprimanded and can be disqualified and/or banned from the store. Stores tend to hold to that quite strictly as well since WotC likes to take away the tournament sanction of stores that don't uphold their rules and that's a guaranteed store killer.

My (single location) experience is that the groups tend to be high school or older with a good smattering of guys in their late 30's or 40's who usually got into it back in college and dropped out until recently. There's some younger kids though I think the 7pm start time and 4+ hour run time keeps most from attending. The ones who are there are always kids of the older players. Primarily male but there's a few female regulars and I see some other girls from time to time. Still, like 90%+ male.

I've never seen anyone give the female players shit or leer at them or make crude remarks, etc. I'd like to think that it's because everyone is just above that but I'm sure it helps that the store owner wouldn't put up with it and that many of the girls are either daughters or girlfriends of other players. I haven't seen anyone give a player crap for being a pre-teen either but again I'm sure it helps that they are children of adult players there and that most of the kids tend to not play well so they stay in the lower rankings and don't play against the "M:tG 4 Lyfe" dudes.

If I had a daughter her age I'd let her play but I'd be playing as well. I doubt I'd leave her alone but then I wouldn't leave a son that age unattended until midnight where he was unsupervised by anyone I knew either.

Edit: I said most of the kids tend to "suck" but that's unfair to them. I think most people that age haven't developed the mental skills to really do well (planning ahead, executing complex moves, understanding some of the more difficult cards) and don't have the same money to throw at building a deck and so they tend to lose matches against older players. Saying they "suck" is exactly what folks there should avoid. Mea culpa.

I assure you that's not the case. Once it's clear that she's 9, yes. Prior to that, less so.

Just dress her up as a stormtrooper, maybe with a bit of fake beard poking out of the seams. That should deter any of the paedophiliacly inclined.

Point taken. Still, harassing players can get you kicked out of tournaments and banned from stores so that alone aught to keep it in check or at least gives you the ability to take action if it happens.

I'm not that concerned about anyone doing anything that would lead to them being banned, I just don't want her to have a bad time or be in an awkward social setting. I have a pretty consistent "this man will cave my head in with an aluminum baseball bat if I displease him" effect on most people which would deter most really offensive things, I just want her to have fun and don't want to bring her somewhere that would obviously be a bad idea. We'll try it and see, maybe. She had a lovely time at PAX East, so it's probably fine.

Take her.

If they're leering at 9, she'll be running the place by 15. Probably with a good bit of drama along the way as well; bring popcorn.

Yes, that's the plan. We've carefully modeled her upbringing on that of Estella from Great Expectations.

No idea if she'd have fun (I'd hope so but I don't know her) but for the six bucks I'd think it would be worth trying. I'd be more worried generally about folks just being older than her but if she can hold her own socially with an older crowd then no big worries. The fact that everyone's topic of conversation is the cards helps.

Probably not a good idea to bring her around a bunch of sexually depraved nerds pretending to be wizards in their late 30's and 40's.

Does no one on this site have children that are athletes? I mean come on at 9 I was playing ball games Friday night or going to a ball game. For girls I'd suggest tennis or golf (women basketball players are a bit to butch).

She plays soccer, just not on Friday nights.

With her friends she could have a world cup party. That's gotta be better than the alternative.

What, playing Magic? She can do both, because it's not an 80's John Hughes movie. No one cares if the athletic kids play Minecraft or if the kids that play Magic also play lacrosse. Different generation, if anything kids get ostracized for not playing trading card games or video games.
