Chicago eked out first place over Boston as the most funny of the 50 biggest US cities.

Quote:
Researchers describe Chicago’s humor profile as improvisational and situation-based, rather than traditional jokes. The city is known as a mecca for improv and stand-up, the study notes.

Why are the all the unfunny cities in the south - excessive heat, lack of snow, education levels? What's your theory.

The list according to a couple humor scholars:
Quote:
Top of the list:
Chicago
Boston
Atlanta
Washington, D.C.
Portland
New York
Los Angeles
Denver
San Francisco
Seattle

Bottom of the list (They are all in the south, by the way.) :

El Paso
Tucson, Ariz.
Las Vegas
Virginia Beach
Tulsa
Arlington
San Antonio
Miami
Jacksonville, Fla.
Fort Worth

Las Vegas seems to be the weird one out. The top of the list seems to be highly desirable tourist destinations/major travel hubs where people can take the chance to open up comedy clubs to draw in the sucker dollar. I guess it could be canceled out by people being depressed over all the money they lose there.

I see they use all sorts of weirdo metrics but I'm not surprised. The number of Second City alumni alone out in the wild is pretty ridiculous. Although the article states that Colbert started with Second City but I think he actually got started with Lookingglass. Or maybe he did both -- I'm no expert I just remember hearing "unlike many others who started with Second City..." when he was announced to replace Letterman.

Did you inject the whole "unfunny cities are in the south" bit? I like to make fun of folks "in the south" as much as the next guy, but you're using a pretty broad definition of "south" here. People don't normally consider anything West of Texas (and usually not even Texas) to be "South". Certainly not in the same context as say Jacksonville (or Atlanta, btw, which is in the top 10). Geographically speaking, Los Angeles is more "south" than Vegas, Fresno, Tulsa, Arlington, and Virginia Beach. That's half of the list we're supposed to call "the south".

I'm thinking you're seeing a pattern which isn't there.

Arguably, people don't normally consider anything west of Texas at all.

Yeah, half of those southern cities aren't even in the south. Las Vegas? Tulsa? El Paso? Tuscon?

The top "funny" cities also lead the nation in gang violence and murder. Guess nothing says funny like gangs, violence and murder.

Oh yeah? Well how about this? :
http://www.katu.com/news/local/Gang-task-force-conducts-raids-across-Portland-metro-area-240314071.html

The article clearly states that in their 8 month "Gang sweep" they arrested 10 people. That's more than 1 a month!

Without Gbaji it would probably be a good 10 spots higher up in the list.

No. I injected the 'top of the list' and 'bottom of the list' because my copy/paste didn't transfer the numbers.

All the cities mentioned are in the bottom half of the US. Virginia Beach is the only locale I'd question as being categorized as south. Where you live isn't relevant.

So this part was written by you?

So that "no", should be a "yes"? Or did I miss where in the original source they mentioned that the least funny cities in the list were all "in the south"? It would not be the first time.

Quote:

Which, as I mentioned earlier, is not normally what people are referring to when they say something is "in the south", or "from the south". They're usually referring to the states that formed the Confederate States during the Civil war and/or those state which were Slave States and/or south of the Mason-Dixon line (and East of the Mississippi).

You said "the south", which usually carries a very specific connotation. Coupled with a topic that spoke to culture and attitude, that connotation is strengthened. But you applied it to locations that don't match up at all. I just found it strange. If you weren't talking about "the south" in a social kind of way, but really were just talking about latitude, then what exactly was the point you were making? What's the relevance?

Here's the original source for the quote. I had to do a lot of facebook scrolling to find it. But I'm having wine so it was a doable task. Not being at all familiar with Keranews I linked to a more notable source in the OP. Sorry for the confusion.

I had actually considered deleting that part as well, but scanned the list and found it to be an accurate enough observation so left it there. Probably to try and ruffle a feather.

1+ me. Smiley: smile

Lol! Why didn't you link to that in the first place (or, I suppose I could read your entire post. doh!)? I was confused because I didn't see that comment anywhere on the link you provided, but you included it in the quote in your post. Now it all makes sense. I will properly direct my ire at them now. I thought we had gone through this before, but I see we need a refresher course. The south is TN, MS, AL, LA, GA, NC, SC. Edges of the south are AR, KY and VA. In extreme circumstances, and usually mostly in the past, MD was considered part of the south because the Mason-Dixie line is technically north of it. FL might be in the southern part of the US, but it is a northern state. TX is it's own, no one wants it. NM and AZ are the west.
