Not at that moment, no. I get that people always love to second guess cases like this and insist that the father should have waited until he was absolutely certain that the other guy was pulling some kind of weapon. But that's something that's really easy to say when you aren't the one who has to make that decision. Odds are that waiting until you are sure is waiting too long. And frankly, you put me in that situation, I'm pulling the trigger if the other guy so much as twitches in a way that could even possibly be threatening.

His life isn't worth enough for me to take that chance. Period. I know that may sound selfish, but if it's "my families life versus some random guy I don't know", that's a no-brainer choice. Sorry random person I don't know, but that's just the way it is.

There are a ton of other options, maybe not in your fictional world. If I were going to shoot the guy, I would aim center mass. You have a better chance of hitting the guy and I don't have to wait until he starts killing and raping people as you're pretending. Then again, I would be smart enough to evaluate the situation and know that the girl was obviously lying.

I'll keep saying it until it sinks in.... IF HE HAD TO ASK, THEN THERE WAS NO APPARENT DANGER. You continue to paint this picture as "random guy's life vs family's life" when it was "obviously lying daughter's story vs bf trying to score story".

Um...the very fact that the father asked means he gave the kid a chance. While I don't totally blame the dead kid for what happened - sneaking into one's girlfriend's bedroom being a past time of teenage boys throughout history - after his lying girlfriend tells her gun toting father she DOESN'T KNOW the guy in her room of course the father's emotions jump to 11. Yours would have too.

At that point the kid needs to do everything in his power to de-escelate the situation. I'm assuming he did not, based on the evidence presented thus far.

Maybe Borderlands, with the complete detachment from reality.

I disagree. I think this is the first time I have ever seen gbaji come down on the side of a potential rape victim (or at least acknowledge that the event is plausible) without asking for severe physical trauma as 'proof' first. Maybe he's on his way to finding a soul.

Hey, that's PTSD.

Possibly. Of course, I'd have to beat the guy to death with my hands, giving my imaginary daughter plenty of time to say something like 'no, Dad, stop, I was lying so you wouldn't be angry with me; actually we've been boning every night for five weeks'. It's almost as if everyone having a gun all the time tends to escalate otherwise minor conflicts.

Strangely enough, it seems that gbaji has found himself up against someone even more delusional and with an even greater disconnect from reality than himself.

To be fair though, my position isn't based on some kind of emotional connection to a potential victim (much less a specific type of victim). It's about the legal rights of the father to protect his family and home. I'd have made nearly the exact same arguments if he'd found some guy in his living room tangling with his stereo rather than in a bedroom tangling with his daughter. Yes... cue in retorts of how I'm equating his daughter to a piece of property if you want, but I'm looking at the legality of using the firearm in that case, nothing more.

Because they don't play music as well as a good stereo?

Well largely, but the sound coming from some of the more skilled ones is unrivaled. Those are few and far between however, so I can understand the frustration in trying to find a good one. Can't blame you for opting for a stereo at that point, they are quite a bit cheaper anyway.
