In its latest bid to catch up with rivals Google Inc. and Yahoo Inc., Microsoft Corp. is launching a revamped Internet search engine it says will help computer users find information faster, view it more easily and organize it better.

Windows Live Search will power queries on live.com, Microsoft's Windows Live Web site, beginning Wednesday. Once the technology has been fully tested, Windows Live Search will replace the existing search engine that powers MSN.com. MSN spokesman Adam Sohn said the company has not determined how long it will run Windows Live Search as a test.

Hated it. Hated the interface, hated the Java or Flash or whatever the hell it used, hated the embedded window for results, hated the fact that hitting "Search" from the main screen gave me an "Error on Page", hated the general clutter, hated it. I can't imagine why anyone would think this is a more effective way of searching than Google.

I ran a couple searches and didn't see anything more spectacular about the search results than I'd exect from any other engine.

Agreed.

Google owns. Why can't Microsoft figure this out?

Because Bill Gates is the devil and likes to try and fool people like that?

Hated it.

I imagined those guys when I started reading your post; did you actually snap you fingers while typing it? But yeah, nothing special at live.com, I'll stick with ol' familiar google.

Live.com has this most annoying *Click**Click**Click* sound everytime I scroll down with my mouse. Considering I listen to alot of music at work, that alone is enough to send that link straight to digital hell.

That's the time bomb that Management put in your machine when they noted you were online so much, nothing to do with Live.com. :)

No, that's Joph snapping his fingers and chanting "HATED IT!" over and over.

So did IE7's for that matter.

I actually like IE7. Works quite smooth with my comp. Much easier then Fire Fox.

There's an IE7?

It's in Beta but it works quite well. Has the Tab internet windows, search engines (your choice),quite customizable. Reminds me of Fire Fox but I can still use my scroll wheel.

A lot of these apps are written using AJAX for passing messages, some active language for the processing on the backend, DHTML to do all the pretty things, and JavaScript throughout. Some sort of Web 2.0 standard was established or somthing to bring about web pages that behave more like applications.

I hope that was vauge enough.

Awkward. Hate the image search, I actually enjoy "paged" searches, not an infinite scroll bar that takes longer to load thumbnails then swithcing pages. The pop up picture is ok, but can get annoying ducking and dodging the images you don't wanna see.

So I give it a 6

Kinda customizable, I like limiting the summary of the links. Looks bland, image search blows.

Ill stick wiith Google for now, Im sure the final release will be better, this is just a beta.

Huh. My scroll wheel works peachy in Firefox.

Really, and this is just my opinion, this is what I want from a search engine: I go to the site, type in my search query and it returns results in a jiffy. That's it. The only possible way you can improve on it is to give me better results. Any bells and whistles, any extra programs, any little spinning wheels that say "Loading..." while it loads some application and searches for today's news and stock tips is just detracting from my searching experience.

I'm absolutely sure that some people love the "portal" experience with news, weather, sports, stock tickers, celebrity gossip and e-mail all on one site along with their search bar. I'm not one of them. I love the fact that Google can be customized for that crap if you want it or, if you're like me, you can load a page in .05 seconds that says "Google" and has a bar to type in your query and nothing else.

When Yahoo first came out with all that portal stuff I was hooked. I set up MyYahoo page and the whole 9 yards. Didn't take long before I got sick of waiting for and looking at stories I won't read and sports I don't like. Amen to a Name and search bar.

I use ObjectDock on my desktop (Windows) I have a Google icon. All it is is just a big "G" I click on that and a itsy bitsy window pops up. Enter my search and it loads IE7 for me with the search results. It's a beautiful thing.

I find this isn't such a problem when you don't have dialup hamster wheels connecting you to the interwebz.

It loads too slowly.

Also, try searching for something.

Then click "News" to get news results.

Click "Web" or "Images" or any of the tabs.

Then click "News" again and the results won't load. Happens every time. You have to reload live.com and search again to get the news results back.
