Seriously, hell and sexy? Really? Especially Hell, that word is used in every **** MMO ever, a million times over. Sexy is getting caught in a filter for sex, I'm guessing.

If this is here to stay, can we at least get a full list of words that are now filtered?

edit: yes I broke the filter a bunch of times, it's kind of hard to make a point if every other word is replaced by ****

As ridiculous as the new words that are being filtered is, I'd be pretty irresponsible if I didn't mention it's not even filtering correctly. I think I remember mention that there would be some growing pains when these filters hit, and I'm hoping that this extreme is only temporary.

It's ridiculous. Stuff that doesn't even break the PG barrier is banned.

There's a big difference between not being allowed to use profanity and not being allowed to even speak like an adult.

The phrases added to the filter were taken directly from the list google adsense published of objectionable phrases they use to determine suitability of a site to maintain adsense advertising eligibility. Yes, some of them are not what I personally would consider PG-13. Google on the other hand does. While we may be able to tune it a bit, the reason for that filter change was to comply with their rules so they don't pull the advertising, which is a major funding source for the site. The timing of implementation is somewhat unfortunate, but this has been pending for quite a few months. I really don't like it either, but its necessary given the funding model that keeps these forums around.

Unless it changed in the last ten hours or so, it is looking more PG than PG-13.

Well, the three words I had problems with seem to be fixed. I'm not going to go through lists of words to find out which ones, but it seems to have settled at a bit at least. Maybe we're back up to PG-13. So thanks for that, at least.

It's silly that all filtered words are replaced with not just all asterisks, but also the same amount of asterisks; it makes some sentences basically indecipherable. It's also completely retarded that so many words are filtered, and the filtering seems all over the place.

Sometimes the word is not filtered if it is immediately followed by another word or symbol:

Is it sexy?
Is it ****

Sometimes the filter eats the symbol immediately following the word:

What the **** <-- there was a question mark there
What the ****

Perfectly non-vulgar, non-demeaning words are filtered:

Hell
Mishit
*****

I mean, what the **** would you call the penile appendage if not *****? It's the scientific term for it. It would be like filtering 'breast' because it refers to a part of the woman's body that is linked to sexual intercourse. Notice how the adjectives are not filtered? Stupid.

Oddly enough, some words that would be considered vulgar, or demeaning, are not filtered. Not going to list those, because **** those harlots at Google; let them figure it out on their own. And I guess no more using the diminutive form for Richard? So any discussion involving the award-winning actor **** Van **** is out of the question?

This isn't PG-13 or even PG, it's G. The forums are now more age appropriate than every video game the ZAM Network covers. That's cool. Also, a lot of these words are not filtered on Google's official websites. The words 'hell', 'sexy', and 'damn', for instance, are not.

So the common way of breaking the filter, using double markup tags in between letters to confuse the system... wouldn't that also confuse any Google-bot out there scouring the search results for the naughty words? Couldn't you set up the Zam filters on the Asylum/OoT to just filter the words to the markup-tag-bypassed method?

Google's sponsors are into GMILFs?

Or... 90, those would be like, GGMILFs, possibly GGGMILFs?

Corporate marketing directors don't want their brand associated with a great many things. Therefore when they make adbuys they as the adseller not to put that content alongside their ad. Due to adsellers being large, they need to have a large catalog of adbuyers, so they stringently regulate the content they purchase space in. Since they are large, lots of places like to use them, and that's how we get the tail wagging the dog scenario of adsellers choosing what content can go in a space instead of ads going where the people are. It can be fairly toxic to the space but that's not really the concern of the adbuyers or sellers. So either resign yourself to take it, or open your window and yell 'I'm as mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore!' Things have got to change. But first, you've gotta get mad!... You've got to say, 'I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!'

Seems odd to me because I'm active on other forums that run Google ads and are much more explicit than this place. As in, no profanity filters and allows for explicit discussion of sex, drug use, whatever. They manage to get by without going all Mary Poppins on the place.

Also hilarious that a word like 'sexy' is filtered. Was there ever a point in time where women blushed and men got angry when you used that word in public? Maybe in the early 1890's? I can understand filtering the more vulgar profanity, like the f-word, the c-word, and part of me doesn't even mind filtering the s-word that refers to defecation, but 'sexy'? Seriously? And 'damn', too? Jesus Christ. Holy ******* ****, it even filters out 'crap'?! What the **** is this?

The quadruple asterisk solution is also pretty half-baked. I know I asked for asterisks instead of the infamous @#%^ gibberish, but I was expecting asterisks equal to the number of characters in the original word. I'm guessing it was done this way due to time constraints, but it's pretty devastating when the filter is this... thorough. Smiley: rolleyes

Don't think I've ever seen a forum with a language policy this strict. I'm quite baffled, really, and I feel that the users are being bumped aside in the neverending quest for more phat lewts. I get that AdSense is crucial to the survival of the forum, but how do all the other forums stay alive? I have yet to come across a forum that actually censors the words 'crap', 'sexy' and 'damn'. I mean, Jesus Christ, did they write that list back when they were writing The Ten Commandments, too? I can't imagine that this forum is the only forum relying on AdSense moneys. How about phoning Google CS and asking them what's up with the Victorian vocabulary?

Who even owns this place anymore? Some Chinese outfit, I think? Face it, no one in the upper echelons cares about "the users" any more. We've been bought and sold a half dozen times and there's no connection left.

Yeah, likewise. You can't swing a dead cat without hitting a dozen forums using Adsense but I've never seen one remotely this strict on language.

I did a quick search in the AdSense policies, and I found an official list of things that might put you in bad standing:

Google wrote:
  • Pornography, adult or mature content
  • Violent content
  • Hate speech (including content that incites hatred or promotes violence against individuals or groups based on race or ethnic origin, religion, disability, gender, age, veteran status, or sexual orientation/gender identity), harassment, bullying, or similar content that advocates harm against an individual or group.
  • Excessive profanity
  • Hacking/cracking content
  • Illicit drugs and drug paraphernalia content
  • Content that promotes, sells, or advertises products obtained from endangered or threatened species.
  • Sales of beer or hard alcohol
  • Sales of tobacco or tobacco-related products
  • Sales of prescription drugs
  • Sales of weapons or ammunition (e.g., firearms, firearm components, fighting knives, stun guns)
  • Sales or distribution of coursework or student essays
  • Content regarding programs which compensate users for clicking ads or offers, performing searches, surfing websites or reading emails
  • Any other content that is illegal, promotes illegal activity or infringes on the legal rights of others

This is the relevant part:

Google wrote:
  • Excessive profanity

Is 'damn', 'sexy', 'crap', and 'hell' considered excessive profanity?

Note that I'm not actively breaking the filter here. This is all its own doing.

With periods: Sexy. Damn. Hell. Crap.
Without periods: Sexy Damn Hell Crap
In reverse order: Crap Hell Damn Sexy

It's all over the ******* place.
