Are you still running that Minecraft server? Get hit with a C&D yet?

So if you haven't been following the Minecraft drama in the past few hours (or days), you might be interested to know that Mojang is currently in the works to shut down Minecraft servers that give perks to players who pay, whether these be donations or not. Players and server operators are not happy.

As far as I currently know, and as the situation currently develops, Erik Broes (@_grum) on behalf of Mojang chatted up with server operators, namely MCPVP, Hypixel, and other ops to verbally serve them a cease and desist on their operations. I've been able to grab up a few snippets from Skype logs and from my friends [1].

Erik Broes: doesn't matter at all, based on plugins or not, you cannot make money with Minecraft without our permission :)
[...]
Erik Broes: running servers is *NOT* A BUSINESS*
Even threatening the presence of lawyers.

Erik Broes: We'll ask nicely and then send really mean lawyers :)

Why does he get to decide that running servers isn't a business? I mean, I get the not wanting people to be making money off of in-game perks, but ultimately I don't see an issue with people getting money for running servers, providing moderation and whatnot.

Yeah. People have been screaming about that non-stop since yesterday.

No one was able to log into our server yesterday because of the massive DDOS attack on Mojang's login authentication servers as the result of this news.

Honestly, I'm not worried about it. They might go after Hypixel or Mineplex or other servers with tens of thousands of people on them. It's kind of like that deal with movie piracy and Megaupload and other major sites that got shut down. The thing is, there are tens-- if not hundreds of thousands of servers like mine. The servers they are concerned with likely make millions of dollars per year, whereas servers like mine pull $4k a month at the very best.

It still makes me a bit upset, however, that they'd be this stupid. I've always said that Mojang doesn't care about online servers, and this says to me they are now saying "We hate online servers for our game. We will shoot ourselves in the foot to slight them and threaten legal action against them."

Mojang itself is nothing but a bunch of guys sitting in a basement in Sweden somewhere jerking their ***** and collecting huge sums of money from Minecraft and Minecraft royalties while they waste time halfheartedly developing new "games" like Scrolls which no one gives two ***** about. They are amateurs, and the entire reason their game is successful is because of the modding and server community they are working so hard to undermine.

Because he owns the software, and stipulated terms of use in the contract these people signed when they bought a license to use it, I'd assume.

Any announcements for official Mojang hosted Minecraft servers? Cause that would be the main reason for this crackdown.

I think I caught something along the lines of hosting servers is fine, charging for gameplay elements/features is not.

Maybe not like me, but plenty of others. The developers of Craftbukkit, for instance-- Forge, Tekkit, and hundreds of server hosting companies which are all infinitely less clown-like than Mojang's people.

They have Minecraft Realms. $13 a month to play plain vanilla Minecraft with other people online. No mods. No claim protection. Single player style Minecraft with whatever handful of people you get to tolerate your online Minecraft world that is identical to every other.

Hosting services make their money from server owners-- the vast majority of which pay their hosting service with money they generate from their servers. Server owners must rent from server host companies because they do not own a dedicated machine to host their server from-- or have access to fiber optic internet for the best download/upload speeds. Server hosting can cost anywhere between $30 and $1,200 a month depending on the size and scale of the server. The number of people who will continue to pay for hosting if it cannot at least pay for itself will not be enough to keep all of these hosting companies in business.

I have read today these changes to the EULA will only affect versions of Minecraft 1.7.9 and later. If this is the case, people will simply keep using older versions of Minecraft for modded and online content-- while Mojang continues their trend of updating the game with bland and uninteresting additions no one needs every 8 months or so.

Yeah. I noticed they backpedaled a bit, actually. They are now asking we do not sell very specific things:

Let's Talk Server Molestation!
Quote:
Hello!

Let’s get one thing clear: we love it when Minecrafters host servers. Tiny or massive, running vanilla or modded Minecraft, we think they’re all great. Playing with friends in persistent worlds is awesome. Everyone knows that.

Over the past week there’s been lots of discussion about Minecraft servers and your right to monetise them. Legally, you are not allowed to make money from our products. There has been one exception to this rule so far – Minecraft videos. We’re about to make a second exception – Minecraft servers.

Hosting servers can be expensive. We want to give hosts a way to cover their costs. That said, we don’t want our players to be exploited or to have a frustrating time unless they pay. The following rules, which may be tweaked at a later date, have been created with these points in mind.

You are allowed to charge players to access your server
So long as the fee is the same for all players, you are allowed to charge for access to your server. You are not allowed to split your playerbase into paying, and non-paying users, nor can you restrict gameplay elements to different tiers of player.

Basically, if you’re charging for access to your server, you are selling a “ticket” and there can only be one type of ticket, regardless of how much people are willing to spend.

You are allowed to accept donations
You are allowed to accept donations from players. You can thank them publicly or in-game, but can’t give preferential treatment for donating. You are not allowed to restrict gameplay features in an attempt to make money.

You are allowed to provide in-game advertising or sponsorship opportunities
You are allowed to put adverts in your Minecraft worlds to help with costs. Used within reason, adverts and sponsorship can be appropriate ways to fund a server.

You are allowed to sell in-game items so long as they don’t affect gameplay
We don’t mind you selling items in game, but they must be purely cosmetic. Pets, hats, and particle effects are OK, but swords, invincibility potions, and man-eating pigs are not. We want all players to be presented with the same gameplay features, whether they decide to pay or not.

There is one exception to this rule – capes! We have a lot of fun making cool capes for extra-special members of our community and Minecon attendees. We’d like to keep them as exclusive as possible. So, yeah, no capes please, even if you’re giving them away for free.

You cannot charge real-world cash for in-game currency
We don’t mind in-game currencies which are earned through playing, but you are not allowed to sell them for real-world cash. Remember – if the stuff you sell affects gameplay, we’re not cool with it.

Don’t pretend to be us. Provide your customers with loads of info
If you do decide to monetise your server, you must clearly state that the purchase is not associated with Mojang, declare who the money is going to, and provide a purchase history and contact details. You should also check the legality of selling digital items in your specific region.

Thanks for reading!
As I hope you’ve noticed, these rules are making attempts to prevent Minecraft servers becoming “pay-to-win.” We hate the idea of server hosts restricting Minecraft’s features to players who have already bought our game! It seems really mean.

We’re hoping that these rules will give hosts opportunity to continue creating awesome Minecraft worlds, and for our players to enjoy them without being forced to spend.

I’m sure we’ll get loads of questions about this subject over the next few days. I’ll prepare a follow-up post once I’ve gathered your queries.

Have a good day!

So "in game items" are allowed as long as they "don't effect gameplay." Basically they have gone from saying they don't want people to profit off their game, to saying they're tired of people complaining about "Pay to Win" servers.

Our server is modded with Pixelmon - basically putting Pokemon into Minecraft. If we ever get a C&D, I'd imagine it would be from Nintendo. The majority of sales we make on our server involve a service we call "Pokemon Tune-Up" where an actual server operator must log in and adjust a player's pokemon size, shiny status, gender, nature, EVs and IVs-- none of which can exceed the games natural boundaries. A Tune Up does not include move sets. A single tune up goes for $20 USD. A full party (6 pokemon) tune up is $60.

Of course, we also sell items, and they do effect gameplay, but it wouldn't be a terrible loss if for some reason we were forced to stopped selling them.

Wonder how the advertising works, do they just use the MOTD or are actual non-destructible billboards created in-game?

Advertising what exactly? If you're referring to the web store, scheduled announcements loop over the in-game chat periodically which include links to our website.

By the way, here is a live map of our server if anyone is interested. No logging in required:

http://gold.pokeheavenmc.us:8123/

Currently we are working on putting together a life-like version of the "Silver League" (Kanto/Johto) regions within Minecraft.

Sorry, meant the general advertising mentioned in your original quote.

Oh yeah. There are plugins and things you can add which broadcast advertising through in-game chat for things unrelated to Minecraft or the server, in which the server owner might get paid $0.01 per click or something along those lines. I've never seen any server actually do this though.
