That was just to shorten it up a bit. Evil spirits, sickness, destroying the harvest, etc. etc.
I actually didn't know about the crop destruction thing (got that from the Wiki), I thought they were afraid the spirits caused some kind of plague.

Not at first. What I mentioned was when it was purely a Gaelic festival. The whole honoring the dead bit was added once Roman rituals were added to it.
Which is still pagan, basically
