Sound splitting.Follow

Was talking with a friend last night at the bar about WoW (cuz we can never not meet up, and it not come up -.-) and someone we go on the subject of Vent and why I do not like to be in it. Not that I'm shy guy of talking, but I like to listen to music, watch TV, etc. Suggestion came up that I get a headphone with a mic, something I actually already have. A decent one that that. I also like to hear what is going on in-game (game atm is WoW) through effects and music. Helps with that immersion effect.

Any hoots, he told me I could split my audio. I could have WoW's effects and music come through my speakers while I have voice (vent) through my headpones. Only thing is, is I do not remember what he told me as to set this up. Google is not giving my help either.

I am on a laptop, Windows 7 (6b-bit). If this can be done, would be awesome if someone can explain it to me :D

Alot of it depends on your sound card. Most can do that, some can't. It comes down to the card or the onboard chipset having enough horsepower to separate the audio feeds, and the program you are using having input and output selection capability. You also need to go into the sound card settings and disable the " play sound via headphones when headphones are plugged in" setting. Much of that will be found in the audio control panel inside windows, some of it will be in the program settings for the program itself.

You can do what you are talking about, but it never really works well. A better solution if you can manage it is a second computer next to the gaming one, run the headphones and voice chat over that sound card and use the gaming rig to drive the main speakers.
