The ironic thing is that there actually is a way to create a win 8.1 image backup but for some totally unknown reason there is no recovery software for it. Fortunately, there is free software for creating and restoring image backups.

Haven't had any issues with the stability of Win8.1 yet, but the user interface was terribad, so I installed Classic Shell the moment I'd installed the OS. So far, though, the only positive thing I've noticed has been the shorter boot times, though, I wonder how much of that is due to the SSD.

I've encountered many oddities that seem to imply that the B-team was working on this operating system. Like the fact that you can't change the color of window titles. You can change the background color (when you change the color of everything else), but not the text color. Black text on a dark background is just ******* amazing. Good job, Microsoft. Although, I could always choose one of the high contrast themes. THEN I can get a different text color, but everything else looks like a kid ran amok with a handful of crayons.

Terrible, terrible design. Thought they'd have fixed it in 8.1, but nooo... why should they. Who needs window titles, anyway. Can't see that **** on your tablet, can you? Priorities, people!

I have Win7 on a machine with an SSD, it's almost all the drive, nothing to do with the OS.

Because this seems like a logical place to ask this...

Is the Windows 8.1 Update launching tomorrow bringing back the start menu, or is that a later update?

Because I'm having a shocking amount of difficulty in finding a non-conflicting answer to that...

[EDIT]

Wait, I think I finally found a source I trust...

It didn't on mine. Can only hope the start menu update is soon.

If this update had been the start menu one, I would have seriously considered going Win 8 over Win 7.

But I bought a cheap Win 7 Ultimate key off of the software swap subreddit. So, win-win. Smiley: lol

I could live with windows 8, except for 2 things.
1.
If you find the hidden ally at exactly 3 am in the red light district, knock on the correct door and say "Bill Sent Me", you can create a windows 8 image backup. However, the 8.1 version doesn't provide restore media. Image backups are the best way to get your system up and running in a hurry but Microsoft hates you.

2.
No native DVD player. You have to purchase optional Media Center or 3rd pty player. The only 3rd pty player fpr win 8 for some reason said my GPU wasn't compatable, even though the Win 7 version worked fine.

Bought a new laptop recently that came with 8.1 installed.

I replaced it for Linux within an hour of booting it up.

Well, I replaced it for one distro, then spent eight hours trying to get to another distro, then went back to the first distro. Linux!
