Annoying FFXI permissions issuesFollow

Long story short, my coworkers wiped my system by accident yesterday.

Long story long: I whined about having an 80 gig drive last week, and my boss said sure, just ghost it over to one of the 500s lying around.... Well, "ghost Cat's hard drive" turned into "let's get Cat a new system" only the "new" system was marginally newer, by a year or so. We had pulled it out of service at a client site for a reason, which turned out to be a bad NIC controller. So last week I rebuilt my system from spare parts again, creating my current Frankensystem. Earlier this week, we changed to a new AV solution, but my system refused to install the AV client. While attempting to fix that problem, they killed my OS. And then while attempting to give me a clean install of Windows 7, they accidentally wiped my shiny new 500 GB drive. Now I have a fresh install of Windows, sans the 50 gigs of apps I was trying to preserve because they're a pain in the **** to reinstall.

I'm rebuilt, and fortunately nothing irreplaceable was lost since all my critical stuff is stored on the server, but I'm running into a major roadblock trying to get FFXI up and running again.

The installer wanted me to run under an admin account, so I switched over to our generic network admin account to get it installed. However, now it's not even letting me run under my normal domain login, swearing I need to be under an account with administrative privileges to do that. This is bizarre, since I've had XI on this system for about six months and don't recall running into that issue before. I've set full control security permissions under the entire Playonline folder, as well as told everything to run as an administrator, but Playonline flatly refuses to let me run.

I can't log in regularly with the domain admin account because I need to check my Outlook, not the admin Outlook, and with Exchange 2007 it's directly tied into the domain authentication. Plus, it's bad juju to run under the admin account when you have an otherwise perfectly usable domain account. I can probably add my regular account as a domain admin if I ask nicely enough, but I'd rather not have to admit to my boss that I can't fix a bloody permissions issue on a video game. (I have permission to run XI on my workstation, although I rarely get a chance to use it.)

ETA: Also, "domain users" is under the administrators group under Local Users and Groups.

Try running in Windows XP SP3 Compatability mode? Also, is UAC off? Is there any chance you grabbed the wrong version of playonline? http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/download/media/vista01.html

UAC is off. I'll try compatibility mode on Monday. Chances of using the wrong version of POL are nil, because I've got an Abyssea collection installer on my pen drive that I ran it from, and the 4GB download from that is always the most current one from SE's servers.

Huzzah, compatibility mode seemed to fix it. Very strange!

Updating now :) Let's hope I get a slow week so I can continue power leveling my crafting skills.
