About 2-3 days ago I started having an odd graphics glitch with POL and FFXI. First off when I load up POL it doesn't appear on my screen. The sound is there, but I can't see it. I can just hit enter several times and progress through the login process and eventually get FFXI to start.

The normal visuals come back when FFXI goes full-screen. I can then log-in to my character as usual. After a playing a while, something triggers this graphics glitch to start occuring. It's usually a spell animation, bard song, or Job Ability. I'm a Bard, and I know that Mazurka is definitely one of the things that can make the glitch happen. It doesn't effect gameplay, but it fairly annoying. Below is a pic and video of the graphical glitch.

Even if I logout and back in the glitch persists unless I do a full restart on my machine. Speaking of my machine, here are its specs:

Time of this report: 8/26/2006, 09:23:33
Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519)
Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
System Manufacturer: BIOSTA
System Model: AWRDACPI
BIOS: Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2400+, MMX, 3DNow, ~2.0GHz
Memory: 768MB RAM
Page File: 534MB used, 1689MB available
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440
Chip type: GeForce4 MX 440
DAC type: Integrated RAMDAC
Display Memory: 64.0 MB
Current Mode: 1280 x 1024 (32 bit) (60Hz)
Driver Name: nv4_disp.dll
Driver Version: 6.14.0010.8198 (English)
DDI Version: 9 (or higher)

I have tried three different drivers for my card since the problem occured. The one on the original install CD (of which FFXI doesn't work at all). The NVIDIA ForceWare(TM) Ver. 81.98 driver (which POLs website recommends, glitch happens). And finally, the newest driver on Nvidia's webiste, the 91.31 (glitch still happens).

I have also tried out fix for the guy had a graphics glitch on the Nvidia card. The one that provided the pic of Leviathan. The registry edit didn't help my problem.

Thanks for reading my long post, I hope someone more knowledgable than I can help me solve my problem.

Your graphics card is rather elderly as such graphics cards go. My guess is that you are just exceeding it's available ram capacity by a significant amount and it is destabilizing your video as a result. You could upgrade to something like a geforce FX 6600 for around $60 and get a huge boost in performance overall. You can't run stabily with that card at 1280 x 1024. I'm actually suprised it runs at all. The rest of your system is fairly decent, though you definitly could upgrade a bit if you choose to.

Yeah I agree with Kao. I had that video card in my computer when I got it. Pretty much had the same trouble you are having, got rid of it and upgraded and havent seen that since.

Thanks for the advice. I'm inheriting a computer from my mother, so I'll see what parts of it I might be able to salvage. I'd bet her graphics card isn't much of anything special, but who knows what she bought. (The computer is about 1.5 years old.)

If not, I'll probably invest in the card you recommended. It seems to be plenty of card for ~$70.

Also, any idea why POL doesn't load visually? It seems odd to me that both of these problems started at the same time, but would be unrelated. I know I could try a full out uninstall/re-install, but I'd like to spend my Labor Day weekend playing, not helplessly watching a download bar.

Is re-install my only option for the POL not showing up error? Or do you think that this is also a card issue? (Remember I've been playing FFXI with this card for 2.5 years without any issue, it just started a little over a week ago.)
