Use WinXP Or WinME with EQ?Follow

#1 Jan 02 2004 at 12:48 PM Rating: Decent
I got a question.. what OS is best for running EQ? I have 256 MB RAM and 1Ghz computer.. i've been running EQ on WinXP as of right now.. it runs fine. But sometimes it will bog right down when zoning, so that zoning takes a good 10 mins sometimes. My brother plays it on WinME with about the same setup as my computer, and he zones like a fiend! Just zips right through.. was thinking, maybe WinXP is just too much of a memory hog to share it with EQ, and I should switch to ME? Or is it just my computer being stupid?

thanks..

No question, winXP all the way. Windows ME was the aborted stillbirth microsoft tried to claim was an operating system. It is to this day the buggiest thing they have ever released. Win xp will load faster, run more stable, and last you longer than win ME by far.

your bogging down on zoning is probably related to a need to defragment or some other reason. Are you behind a router, and is your brother sharing the same connection?

Yah are on a router.. LinkSys router.. actually, a hub connected to a router.. with cable connection. Never seemed to slow loading down before. I think that defragging may be a good idea. I haven't done that in a while. I was very much considering reformatting the harddrive, and reinstalling everything. I usually do that when my computer slows to crap.. it seems to help.

Anyways, thanks for the help on what OS is better :) I'll stick with XP then.

After you defrag try putting ice on the top of the box too, could be temerature related.

Alternately
it could be that you're BELOW the recomended system requirements for RAM when running EQ on XP.

Recommended Specs:

Windows® 98/2000/ME/XP
Pentium® III or greater
512 MB RAM
32 MB Direct3D compliant video card and hardware T&L (i.e. ATI Radeon or Nvidia GeForce 2 or greater)
DirectX 8.0 compatible sound card
56.6k (or faster) Internet connection
16X speed CD-ROM
1.5 GB+ hard drive space

I'd buy another 256 RAM stick. Unless you're using XP for EQ and word processing only you're going to se performance hits from the lack of RAM in nearly everything.
