High Cpu Useage ProblemFollow

#1 Aug 10 2012 at 6:59 PM Rating: Decent
Hi gang,

I seem to be having an issue with my computer stalling and barfing and Norton(yes I am running Norton-even though My BF tells me to get rid of it) pops up to tell me that 100% of my CPU is being used either by IE if i have a browser window open at a help page; or by the EQ2 Client itself?

I am running:

Intel Core 2 Duo 2.83 GHZ
4 gigs of RAM
GTX 550 TI Nvidia/1 GIG DDR 5 RAM

the video card is just new..he upgraded that cuz he thought my other one was the problem? apparently not? lolol

and I don't have everyting turned on to the max either? figuring if i turn some of the graphics goodies down that it would fix the issue? HAH!

my computer tech BF is stumped and doesn't understand what is being such a *HOG* that its stealing all my resources and the game pukes?

Oh and I am using XP Home SP3

Any ideas and/or Help, would be GREATLY appreciated!

I would bet that your issue (besides Norton) is RAM. 4gb is recommend, I think. Everything else is fine. http://www.everquest2.com/faq#Q43

What version of Windows are you running? Has your techie BF gone through the taskmanager and dumped all the stuff that doesn't need to be running?

I'd guess it's something to do with RAM as well. That can be a number of things, though. It's possible that you just have too much memory consumption if there's too many programs auto-loading at Windows startup. I cut down the number of programs I have auto-load on bootup and that made a big difference for me. Might be something to check out there--the only "essential" non-system tool that should be booting up with your computer is your anti-virus program, IMO.

Wonder if some of your memory died?

Removing items from startup helps alot but there are also other ways to free up resources.

one way of freeing up resources is finding proccesses that use alot in the background and lowering their priority and raising EQ2's (this would need to be done every game launch)

another method of freeing up resources is starting the game then using taskmanager to shut down explorer (when you exit the game you can start it up again)

also if you find your main disk's freespace is dropping quickly naviagate in it to [maindrive]>crash folder and delete everything in the folder.

I also get this problem after going to SS (Skyshrine) I have some program called awesome*32.exe running that drops me to 3 fps from 24 to 34 fps before hand. I have to restart my computer to shut it off but i hear ts part of EQ2 now.... what ever it is sony nees to figure out the darn problem....

I think that's the launchpad, do you have it running in the background?

Everquest 2 is a very RAM hungry game. My old Sony Vaio laptop had 4 gigs of system ram and I had to tone down the graphics. My current gaming laptop has 16 gigs of ram and the graphics are turned all the way up and I still have 12 Gigs left, without any stutters.

Anyway, if your machine (ie. motherboard can handle it) allows it, might I suggest more? RAM is being mass produced these days and is fairly cheap.
