Yes, it is still in the game. I picked up the books today. They were not near the stairs, but they were at the other end of that corridor, next to a couple of small mushrooms.

Btw, the part you have to take the necklace back to the Willow Wood is actually a new quest. It is called "Ash Covered Necklace", lvl 27, starting zone RoV.

I got this today after I finished the repeatable quest Keeping the Topside safe countless times and it finally changed to Surface Assault.

Even though I had searched high and low for this quest starter and was there at server start numerous times as the only one in the zone, it didn't pop up until I had Surface Assault in my log and than it spawned immediately at zone in.

This quest is initiated by clicking on a book near the entrance of the Ruins of Varsoon at -273, 0, -28 .

You must then head to the jail area and click on one of the reddish skeletons in there -272, 8, -157 . You'll receive an ash covered necklace. Examine it for the next quest.

Near the entrance of the Ruins of Varsoon I found a journal purposely abandoned by a very unfortunate adventurer. By the condition of the journal it appears to have been left here a while ago. I have little faith that the author of this journal is still alive, but while here with in the Ruins of Varsoon I will keep an eye out for this misfortunate adventurer.

Stage 1

While here in the Ruins of Varsoon keep an eye out for the author of this journal, dead or alive.

Start:	Find the author of the journal; dead or alive.
Complete:	I found the remains of the author of the journal.

I've found the corpse of someone whom quite possible was the author of the journal.

I may have found the author of the journal. There was an old necklace within the remains of the corpse.
