It looks like at least two different roots activate for the second stage of this quest. I just confirmed the root WNW of the lift at 145,10,-83.

The root is actually west, northwest of the lift.

This quest starts by talking to Whittier in Kelethin at 446, 88, 215 . The quest is not available to Evil players.

Find a clickable log at -73, 7, -85 . It's near the Sapling Spur. Click it to spawn 2 crystalline beetles that you must kill.
Find a clickable root at 98, 9, 118 or 145,10,-83 . Click it to spawn 2 bark beetles that you must kill.
Find a clickable mushroom at 83, 9, -157 . It's close to Tunare's Sapling, north of the lift. Click it to spawn 2 blue tunnelers that you must kill.

Return to Whittier for your reward.

Whittier explained to me that the Fae are adverse to killing unless it's in self-defense. They place a high value on life, but realize that sometimes compromises must be made in the name of safety. Clearing out some wood-boring beetles beneath the city will help protect the trees from disease and rot.

Stage 1

The Greater Faydark is home to many creatures, including various beetles that might damage the trees supporting Kelethin. I need to see if there are any of these beetles present and then destroy them.

Start:	Crystalline beetles can be found in logs on the forest floor. I should examine some of the logs and if I find any of these beetles, kill them.
Complete:	I've examined a fallen log.

Start:	The crystalline beetles must be killed!
Complete:	I've destroyed some crystalline beetles.

I've located and destroyed some crystalline beetles.

Stage 2

The Greater Faydark is home to many creatures, including various beetles that might damage the trees supporting Kelethin. I need to see if there are any of these beetles present and then destroy them.

Start:	Bark beetles can be found in roots growing up through the forest floor. I should examine some roots and if I find any of these beetles, kill them.
Complete:	I've examined some roots.

Start:	The bark beetles must be killed!
Complete:	I've destroyed some bark beetles.

I've located and destroyed some bark beetles.

Stage 3

The Greater Faydark is home to many creatures, including various beetles that might damage the trees supporting Kelethin. I need to see if there are any of these beetles present and then destroy them.

Start:	Blue tunnelers can be found inside mushrooms near large trees. I should examine some mushrooms and if I find any of these beetles, kill them.
Complete:	I've examined some mushrooms.

Start:	The blue tunnelers must be killed!
Complete:	I've destroyed some blue tunnelers.

I've located and destroyed some blue tunnelers.

Stage 4

I should let Whittier know that I found and destroyed some of these beetles.

Start:	Whittier the treant will be anxious to hear whether I encountered any of the beetles mentioned in the book he gave me.
Complete:	I spoke with Whittier.

I've spoken with Whittier.

The Fae compromised on cleaning out areas beneath Kelethin by asking Whittier to "take care" of things for them.
