When you finish Vaerha Farsight's quests, she says be sure to come back if you fina anything else interesting (no quest). If you go back and kill some more gorillas (which seems a shame as you know they're kinda cool at this point), the panther hide will drop to the ground. (not a chest drop, can be done at any level). It's not rare, I think people thought it's rare because if you're killing and killing hoping for the drop without doing the quest, it sure would seem darn rare ;)

I got the drop shorty after doing Vaerha Farsight quest Matching Tablets think I killed may be 3 mobs and got the drop. So I wouldn't call it a rare drop I know other people in my guild who had no problem either getting the drop right away as well. So so much for a rare drop.

I went to 1630, 141, -10 : up the hill in the gorilla area and the carcass dropped from the first gorilla I killed in that area - after I'd done the preliminary quest.

This quest starts when you examine a well-groomed panther carcass, which you got as a unique drop from a Stonechest gorilla. If you have done Matching Tablets it should drop for you fairly quickly.
