Anyone else a gold member (without a dark elf pack) who has found this mask doesn't work?
is it like that for everyone? do i REALLY have to buy the dark elf pack for my item to work?

I filed a petition on this question yesterday and asked:
"I have illusions visible and the Guise of the Deceiver equipped and activated, but everything in Freeport either threatens or refuses to do business with me.
Does this item still work?"
This is the response I received:
"Thank you for contacting Sony Online Entertainment regarding your "Guise of the Deceiver!" As you may know, in the original EverQuest, your character's race played a factor in how guards and other NPCs regarded you. You were therefore able to use illusions in order to manipulate this.
In EverQuestII, however, it's a bit different. Reactions from city guards and NPCs are instead based solely upon your citizenship, which the NPCs are able to discern. In EverQuestII, through the betrayal system, it is possible to become a citizen of any city, even if you are an "evil" race. Therefore, citizenship is used as the determining factor. As <your character> is currently a citizen of a good-aligned city (New Halas), she will unfortunately not be very welcome in an evil-aligned city like Freeport, regardless of what race she appears as."
So, sadly, no using the Guise to take a little vacation (or finish a quest) in Freeport or Neriak.

Ah, I didn't understand the first time you asked. The Guise is only Illusion, not faction.

I myself haven't played EQ1 in about a year, and don't even know if my account is still active. However, I do/did have a guise of the deceiver mask. These comments may have been mentioned, but I thought I'd clarify.
1. It was originally named guise of the deceiver.
2. It could originally be used by all classes.
3. It was nerfed to be bards and rogue only renamed Mask of the Deceiver.
4. It could be used to make rogue epic easier, but was implemented long before that.
5. It is/was available in the casino on EQ1.
6. It applies dark elf illusion. In EQ1, you received a faction modifer based on race. So, if you were a good character, with this mask, you could possibly get into certain evil cities. However, it was a straight modifier SO, the same good person normally welcomed in say, North Freeport or Felwithe had a very good chance of being KOS in that city, because the citizens thought he was a dark elf.
So, it's a fun mask, and makes it a lot easier to do a lot of things. Regardless, it's fun. I understand that a lot of people are upset that it's doesn't maintain the faction value. But, hey. We all get shafted. I'm a priest looking for a 1 handed heritage weapon, but all I see are PGT, SBH, PGT, Ghoulbane, BBC, and etc. I guess I'll have to wait until 42, until I can get the screaming mace.
That'll be cool. I quested that thing so many times on EQ1, lol.

Does this mask actually serve a purpose? I mean can I walk through Freeport when it turns me into a dark elf and not get agroed? Will they sell me things from the city? Can I get quests that I couldn't before? What is the mask for really?

has anyone ever thought of it as a 4agi 150vs magic CHARM if your evil. if you cant use it as a guise, atleast its a charm that give you stats

i still have the original mask of deception on rodcet nife , and being a high elf it was very useful for traveling nek forest without aggroing anything.

The Mask of Deception in EQ1 was found on a named Froglok in Lower Guk - coming from an all Bard guild this mask was just one of the many that Bards could use - it had great charisma which bards needed for charming mobs, for humans it gave night vision. Another great illusion was The Lute of the Howler (turned you into a warewolf) and was primary equipable. Making this a common item for all players in EQ2 may not have as much appeal but illusions were fun in EQ1 and very useful

In eq1 the mask of the deceiver was for making the rogue epic MUCH easier.. where you had to go into the dark elf city and pickpocket that one guy.. so no it wasn't pointless

U can sell it to a merhcant for 20 gold, and less then that to a greedy merchant.

Actually your all wrong... this item is still in game in eq 1 from casinio got from golden tickets, any class can click it... There there is a De mask that only bards and rogs can use from guk ad can be gotten at really low level. This quest is worth it for the gsp and I would love to have the mask also. in EQ1 the Mask was orignaly call Guise of the Decever , and all classes could use it , about 4 months after the games release it was nerfed and had the name changed to the Mask of deception , and they added the class restictions put on it. this nerf did not effect the masks that where allready in the game .a exclusive batch of very vet player still have the origial masks on there old characters

Yes it was originally called guise of the deceiver... and in eq1 the illusions did help you get into cities you could not normally go into... and i dont know about your sever but the most i ever saw one of these masks(and i think it was the erudite one) sell for was 50k. Dont rant about stuff you dont know the whole story on.
lol Drantic. Actually, originally, it was called Guise of the Deceiver, and anyone could equip it. Soon after the item was nerfed into the Mask of Deception that only Bards and Rogues could use... So yeah, learn the artifacts...

If you notice, it says no trade, so you cannot sell it to other players, only vendors.

First off, to everyone who ever said this mask is pointless is stupid. Viciouss, I hate you. And Uinolen, you're wrong. Originally it was the "Mask of Deception" that changed bards and rogues. While similar, the names differentiate the two. Second of all, its a toy. People paid 500,000 PLATINUM in everquest1 for similar toys(barbarian hide mask, amulet of necropotence). It is just fun being able to be any race and turning into another race. Yes, it would be nice for already evil characters to have a similar counterpart quest...but get over it. You get a nice toy, you get lots of points, and you can say you did the quest. And if you are being kicked out of freeport with this illusion, good. In everquest1 if your faction wasnt good enough you got kicked with illusions on, just view it as that you're so hated by that particular faction that the whole town knows you, even in illusion form. So on an end note, dont criticize our legacy items from everquest1, instead go play everquest1 and learn the artifacts, the lore, and the real world of norrath...learn the game.

The EQ1 Guise changed bards and rogues of specific races into a dark elf. That's why it isnt human.

finished today, and as of 6/18 it is NERFED. all this does is change you to a dark elf. I walked into freeport and got kicked out. IMO this should be changed to a human, cuz they're good OR bad. Then you can walk into either city, so it has advantages both ways. otherwise it's pointless, doesn't even look good in the house, it's in a big box with a lock on it. i wanted an evil looking mask to welcome ppl to my house :(

as of 6/4, i heard this still allows you to sneak into freeport from a person in my group that did (i havn't tried, as i've not completed this yet).

Some illusion can affect your faction to towns. You can roam in Freeport with DE illusion on. Try not to use this in Qeynos. UNLESS SoE nerfed this.

What's the point of this mask? Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's basically a petrified dark elf eye that doesn't require a bone. Seems pretty worthless, would be nice if it allowed you to sneak into your rival city.

DO NOT leave nek castle to re- enter.
i was in a group of two.
we spent 2 hours spawning everthing (the only one i needed was up from the very first second i walked in).
i finally get them all up and my mate arrives. so i leave castle so he can join and get quest done. lo and behold no re rentry for 18 FREAKIGN hours. :(. which means not only did i waste my evening but now i will have to wait for however long for the named i need to pop again

This mask is a great idea and anyone can use it! I hope there are more to come (either discovered or added) in the game. I wish they would take the "no-trade" off it, though; I did the quest and I am a dark elf so it does not do me any good, unless I want to change my eye colour. =)

Turns you into a Dark Elf, no bone required. USed to be that you could roam Freeport ( If you were good, switched your faction ), Sony fixed the bug so now its just an illusion item. Using CoQ while in this form ports you to Greystone yard

The quest is called "A Missing Mask". It starts in the basement of Nek Castle, from a clickable crate, near one of the Marionettes. You need to kill Billy 4 times.
